Alora for DD due August.

And middle name suggestions. Last name is Smith.

No they won’t

OK, but the majority of posters on this thread tend to agree with me.

abracadabra1980 · 15/05/2025 08:43

Butter?

HugoYorway · 15/05/2025 09:41

Every name is made up. That’s how it works. That's a poor argument usually in defence of a name that posters don't respond favourably to.
There's a big difference according to when it was made up, and whether it has been in use.
The Al- beginning isn't a Hebrew one.

CrushingOnRubies · 15/05/2025 10:20

Reminds of me alohamora too.

Alora rhyme with Nora and Laura. because it could sound like “Eh Laura (what are you on about?)”

not that keen I’m afraid

I’m not going to copy and paste the entire internet.
Google the name. Everything says that name either means “the lord is my light” or “my dream”.

Nope. First result is a town in Spain, as is the second, third, fourth and fifth. The sixth is Wikipedia that helpfully tells me that Alora can be a gastropod from the family of wentletraps (whatever they are), a brand of HRT patches, the town Spain again, and then a given name (which says it's a modern version of Elora)

Even when I specify Alora name, it tells me that it means "my dream" in Bentu, "and at that hour" in Spanish, that it's a corruption of elora or Eleanor.

Only on those daft American naming sites that are full of Tragedeighs does it fit what you think it is.

Only on the sense that all words are "made up". But I think you know that apple is a word but dfheigheredxij isn't.

I’d like to remind people that different languages and cultures exist outside of your own bubble!!

I think if you are already set on it as a name then maybe don't ask for people's opinions of it on MN if you actually don't want their opinions.

Honestly if you like it use it. But now you know lots of people don't seem to like it. I prefer Elora to Alora. But that's my preference and it doesn't have to match yours

s3tut0y3r · 16/05/2025 00:22

Aurora sounds nicer to me and it can be shortened to Ro.

Alora could get confused with Laura.

thefirebird · 16/05/2025 00:34

The child could never ever visit Italy with the name Alora.

SnowFrogJelly · 16/05/2025 01:02

Margarine!

The child could never ever visit Italy with the name Alora.

I lived in Italy for a year with a flatmate called Salma (Italian for corpse) and she was fine. There was definitely a certain brief look people got when she introduced herself but it’s not that Italians are so thick that they can’t work out that a foreigner’s name is different from the word in their language.
Alora is not the same word as allora. We don’t tell people not to call their kids Mia and Ella because those names are words in other languages.

Scottyme · 16/05/2025 06:57

I actually instantly thought Aloha! Followed by margarine and suet.

Whilst, it’s not my cup of tea as I wouldn’t want to basically be called Um or after a contraceptive, it’s up to you. But remember your child can only hate you for it and change it by deed poll when she is old enough.

you have asked for opinions tho and that is what people have given. I’m guessing by the defensive tone maybe the dad/other family don’t like the name either, so you came on here to strengthen your argument, yet very few like it

Scottyme · 16/05/2025 06:58

Just don’t call her something like Alora Sophie Smith because then she’d have unfortunate initials too

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 16/05/2025 07:00

Banmooo · 13/05/2025 22:31

Allora is an Italian filler word, it means well, so, then, and um.

Really bad as a name

It's also a town in southern Spain, that was my first thought when I saw it!

HotHoney · 16/05/2025 07:03

It’s clearly not a crowd pleaser.

I think there’s an influencer on tiktok with a kid called it. She’s always wheeling her out and saying get ready with RaRa but the girl can’t speak properly yet so I’m not sure if it’s Alora or Ulura.

stample · 16/05/2025 20:33

known of an Ellora, Illira and Alura they are nice when said but spelling I think is challenging

GreeneryGrass · 16/05/2025 21:08

Not sure you'll still be reading these OP but for what it's worth, me and my husband both thought Alora sounded like a lovely name. We love a quirky name and I think that sounds lovely!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 17/05/2025 09:49

MelliC · 13/05/2025 22:37

Allora is Italian for "so" or "well then" or "right".
As in "right, shall we go then?"

Give the poor child a proper name!

Yep.

So no

How about Allegra?

anon4net · 18/05/2025 06:19

In our circle I know several Alora/Elora born in the last 2 years. Three using it as a first name and one as a middle name. Before two years ago I'd never heard of the name.

user1492757084 · 18/05/2025 09:27

Alora Smith is pretty.
Also ...
Alison Smith
Allegra Smith
Alanna Smith
Laura Smith
Arrietta Smith

Love it

Headycloud · 03/07/2025 15:39

The thing is MN cannot compute a name that isn’t Susan or John.

anything slightly different and it generates ridiculous comments.

i do wonder the demographic actually on the baby names forum especially the age of ppl responding.

i like it and i also like Elara 💓 ignore the criticism

HugoYorway · 03/07/2025 15:53

I don't think that is true @Headycloud , but *The thing is MN cannot compute a name that isn’t Sophia or Theo.' might be.

Age will make a difference, but not necessarily in a bad way.

I just don’t think naming a child a word that means “oh well” or “as I was saying” or “anyway” in the language of a country she is bound to go to is a good idea!
