And middle name suggestions. Last name is Smith.

You've made your mind up. Call your daughter that. You have your opinions, we have ours.

flutterbye99 · 14/05/2025 11:47

@SalmonisthebestfishAlora is my daughter’s name. Her middle name is Grace.

The name Alora finds its origins in the African - Bantu culture of Botswana. Derived from the Bantu language, Alora carries the profound meaning of My Dream.

she was a Rainbow baby and given my DH is African it really fits.

ginasevern · 14/05/2025 12:02

Only if it has cultural/family significance, otherwise people will think it's a "try too hard" made up name.

It makes me think of Allora too. Elora would be better. Elora seems to autocorrect to Flora though which might be annoying (although Flora might be a good alternative!)

Although another margarine!

Jungfraujoch · 14/05/2025 13:25

I stayed in a village in Spain called Alora.

HugoYorway · 14/05/2025 13:26

Doesn't that have an accent on the A?

WildCats24 · 14/05/2025 13:42

I was friends with an Alora at secondary school. She was constantly explaining her name…no, it’s not Laura; how to spell it; etc. Some of the boys made fun of her—said that her name was Laura, but she was too stupid to remember it, ie, uh…Laura.

Angrymum22 · 14/05/2025 03:38

Is your native language Hebrew? And are you religious ? If yes then Alora is fine. But if you don’t speak Hebrew then it it pretty pointless giving your child an unusual name that you will be explaining for the rest of your child’s life.
We chose grandparents names, which are all currently under used so a little unusual, but so much easier to explain. And you don’t need a degree in semantics to understand them.

Edited

If she speaks Hebrew then she'll know that it's transliteration is El like ELijah or MichaEl or ELiezar or NathaniEL. It's a word for God so it really doesn't get spelled as Al on English.

TheHorrorsPersist · 14/05/2025 21:03

Lovely name, makes me think of Alora/Elora Danan the baby from Willow.

Vitrolinsanity · 14/05/2025 21:25

Alora laughs

You can’t get annoyed asking what people think on a UK based site. The UK is small compared to say the US where you might be from.

I don’t speak Italian but know that alora is like “ummm” and that’s the first thing I thought of. Second thing I thought of was Aloha but I have LILO and Stitch on my mind.

Why are you ignoring the poster who says that El means God not Al? I don’t know which is correct but I would be checking before using Alora.

Because I have a job and believe it or not I’m not sat on MN 24/7 to constantly reply to comments???

She claimed I was “ignoring posters” because I had not reposed in less than 24 hours?? I am allowed to defend myself.

You asked the question! No need to get pissy at people because they've answered the fact that we all thought the same enough with the made up names! You'll be back in a few years moaning because little alora gets teased at school because even a child knows it's made up!

Every name is made up. That’s how it works.

Not just that one, like every reply you’ve posted has been so defensive. I get it, you probably didn’t expect so many people to dislike the name so strongly but you don’t actually have to listen to us and you could just use it anyway.

I doubt you’re going to convince anyone that it’s a nice name unless they already think so but if you like it, what does it matter?

I’m not going to copy and paste the entire internet.
Google the name. Everything says that name either means “the lord is my light” or “my dream”.

Don’t come asking for opinions and then get arsey because you got opinions 🤷🏼‍♀️
If you like it - use it
You clearly don’t care what others think anyway; so on the whole a wasted exercise 😵‍💫

FWIW I also saw the suet reference first glance and prefer “Laura”

Here is what your link said:
Alora feels like a hybrid name – part authentic, part synthetic – maybe because it is. It squeaked onto the Top 1000 in 2017 as part of the trend for girls' names starting and ending with A, and has since increased its popularity, recently entering the Top 200. It is likely a spelling variant of Elora, but also sounds a lot like the Italian word allora, meaning "so, then, therefore, well.*

Not exactly an endorsement, @Salmonisthebestfish

pompey38 · 14/05/2025 22:48

HollieHock · 13/05/2025 22:27

Sounds like a margarine.

Double LL in Italian but “Allora" is a versatile word used to express various meanings, including "then," "so," "well," or to introduce a new topic or pause for thought.
Not a good choice for a name

Most names have a lovely meaning if you look for it, doesn’t necessarily mean they sound lovely. But “margarine” and “my dream” do sound similar so just go for it if you’re not bothered about people mixing the two up.

ChorizoDog · 15/05/2025 07:00

You asked what people thought and they told you. Don’t ask the question if you don’t want the answer 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally, I think it’s pretty and had no idea it was used in Italian. Obviously I have heard of Flora & Atora, but I don’t think these are things she would be teased for.
