Alora for DD due August.

And middle name suggestions. Last name is Smith.

I’d like to remind people that different languages and cultures exist outside of your own bubble!!

Many languages and cultures exist but you are posting on a UK-centric website and a surname like Smith suggests that you do not have any affiliation with any of those languages or cultures?

As a name, I'm afraid I just don't like it.

Alora means “the lord is my light”

Does it though?

wehavea2319 · 13/05/2025 23:11

I like it. Similar to Aurora but rolls off the tongue a lot easier.

Seems to depend on which site you look it up on? Several suggest it is a Bantu name meaning "my dream". Or a Spanish word meaning "at that hour" or the Italian place-holding phrase as already suggested.

JessyCarr · 13/05/2025 23:21

Well Bantu isn’t a language (it’s a family of hundreds of African languages). In one of them, Setswana, “Lora” means dream.

OP please use whatever name you love most, but if a specific meaning is important to you don’t rely on any old Google search. Dr Google is not an etymologist!

I think Italians use it when they are thinking things over…..

This

Ellmau · 13/05/2025 23:29

It sounds pretty but looks odd.

Would you consider Allegra?

zebrastripesarefun · 13/05/2025 23:41

Beautiful name and meaning

Strokethefurrywall · 13/05/2025 23:58

Reminds me of Elora Danan, the adorable baby from Willow.
I like it!

Wisterical · 14/05/2025 00:02

Suet. I know it's not but that's my immediate connection.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 14/05/2025 00:08

It sounds like a P&O cruise ship

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 14/05/2025 00:18

@Strokethefurrywall that was my first thought too. OP I think Alora/Elora is a very pretty name.

Weefreetiffany · 14/05/2025 00:23

Alora? I hardly know her!

seriously though it’s an italian filler word, sorry to disappoint

there are lots of names that mean light or shining, good to sense check these things

paranoiaofpufflings · 14/05/2025 00:29

I quite like it! I do also like the alternative Elora.

With her due date, why not use August as the middle name? Or Summer?

Alora August Smith
Alora Summer Smith

Very true, but you have asked what people think of the name, and they have given their opinions as requested!

Yes, you did ask for opinions, OP, yet you seem very defensive and snippy when posters actually give you their opinions!
Use whatever name you like… but you did ask what posters thought!!

TheaBrandt1 · 14/05/2025 00:36

We used to host Italian teens they said this all the time thinking about it.

SpottedDonkey · 14/05/2025 00:40

A cheap Korean car. “Actually, I drive a Hyundai Alora”.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 14/05/2025 00:44

Hotel chain

1SillySossij · 14/05/2025 00:57

First thought cilla black and 'a Lorra, Lorra laughs'
Second thought - suet!

Which is why many people, myself included, jumped to the Italian umm, well, hmm filler word.

If you don’t want people’s unfiltered thoughts, don’t ask. Unless you just wanted everyone to tell you how nice it was. Those places exist but they aren’t MN. It’s a bot rude to ask for opinions and then tell everyone that they are uncultured xenophobes!

Snorlaxo · 14/05/2025 01:44

You can’t get annoyed asking what people think on a UK based site. The UK is small compared to say the US where you might be from.

I don’t speak Italian but know that alora is like “ummm” and that’s the first thing I thought of. Second thing I thought of was Aloha but I have LILO and Stitch on my mind.

Why are you ignoring the poster who says that El means God not Al? I don’t know which is correct but I would be checking before using Alora.

tinytemper66 · 14/05/2025 01:52

Dreadful. So many beautiful names out there and you chose one that sounds like margarine?

You asked the question! No need to get pissy at people because they've answered the fact that we all thought the same enough with the made up names! You'll be back in a few years moaning because little alora gets teased at school because even a child knows it's made up!
