Can siblings have the same middle name

Can two female siblings have the same middle name as their mother or is that a bit ridiculous?

Its fine. No one really cares what anyone's middle name is anyway. If you really wanted to you could give them two middle names just to mix it up a bit.

InigoJollifant · 05/05/2025 21:17

Nobody will ever really know. Not sure any of my friends know my middle name, let alone my siblings middle name, let alone my mum’s middle name!

I am a firm believer in middle names being for sentiment & meaning.

The brothers in My Brother Stealing Second deliberately choose the same confirmation name so they have the middle names, I think it’s sweet.

MrsPlantagenet · 05/05/2025 21:19

My friend is one of 4 sisters and they all have the same middle name.

Middle names are pointless, so why not?

Only when I read this did I realise I do have the same middle name as my siblings, as do my children!

my siblings & me have the same family surname as a middle name. And my children have my surname as a middle name. We all have another (different to each other) middle name as well.

fashionqueen0123 · 05/05/2025 21:20

Isn’t there one more name
you like in the world?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 05/05/2025 21:21

It's absolutely fine - DH's family have a middle name which all the boys have had for several generations - they like sharing it with dad/grandad/uncle/cousin.

We also gave our boys middle names that had meaning for my side of the family (a different one for each of them).

BunsenBurnerBaby · 05/05/2025 21:21

My sister has a middle name that is a family surname. My parents didn’t give me the name. I wish they had.

Velvetbee · 05/05/2025 21:21

My sons, husband, brother in law, nephew and father in law all have the same middle name.

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/05/2025 21:30

Absolutely fine!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 05/05/2025 21:32

Yeah if I had a second, I'd use the same middle names - me and dd have the same one as well x

Bunnyisputbackinthebox · 05/05/2025 21:40

2 of my ds's have...
I realised about a year ago.
Dc were 22 and 30....

Leaffilledlattice · 05/05/2025 21:42

It seems a bit unimaginative.

SkaneTos · 05/05/2025 21:54

Of course!

(Not the same, but I know two brothers with the names "Timothy Jonathan" and "Jonathan Timothy").

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/05/2025 22:29

Yes it’s fine.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 05/05/2025 22:32

Of course! In my dad’s family they all have the same middle name regardless of sex. I think it’s a past surname. I like it.

That's hilarious! Were they the only 2 names the parents liked?!
I also know two brothers for whom the middle name of the elder one is the first name of the younger (it was the parents' second favourite boys name so when they were having another son they decided to use it again).
Even better (ok this is a total tangent now), I know a child who was introduced to me as Noah. His grandmother was my friend. After a while whenever she talked about him she would call him Gabriel instead of Noah. I was very confused so asked her why the name change. She said that his parents also had a dog called Noah (their favourite boys name), and it got too confusing having a baby and a dog with the same name, so they had to start calling the child by his middle name instead. 😂

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 05/05/2025 22:51

It’s fine, most of the women in my family have one middle name in common. Middle names are often family names

DuckBee · 05/05/2025 22:54

Well if it’s good enough for Princess Beatrice and many of Elizabeth II’s descendants…

2chocolateoranges · 05/05/2025 22:56

My friends middle name is her sisters first name.

you can use any name you wish

Reddelilah · 06/05/2025 08:36

They ‘can’t have the same names. We could all have the same names.

But whether they should given how many beautiful names exist is the more important question?

pumpkinrind · 06/05/2025 08:42

not the same but my first two kids have middle names that are traditional and from a grandparent. My third child has a middle name that is a combo of the two and is very untraditional - think yoonique.

I think it’s a good idea. They’ll probably have different last names one day so would be nice to have the same middle names

PicklesMacGraw · 06/05/2025 12:49

I’d say it doesn’t matter at all. Almost no one uses midddlenames. They are irrelevant and it’s only new parents that care.
