We love the name 'ALE-A' I'm not sure how best to spell it as Google suggests Ela but partner feels it's too much like Ella. We like Aela but this seems to spell 'A-LA'. Suggestions needed.

Ayla

starryeyed19 · 05/05/2025 19:06

Could you not just spell it Alea? Aila?

starryeyed19 · 05/05/2025 19:06

GoldenRosebee · 05/05/2025 19:06

Ayla

Oh, definitely this!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 05/05/2025 19:07

Eh?
Honestly, if it's this difficult your daughter is in for a life of correcting people over the spelling and pronunciation of her name

Just choose something else.

DorothyStorm · 05/05/2025 19:07

Ale like the beer and then capital A?

pinkyredrose · 05/05/2025 19:08

Aliyha.

HateHorridHenry · 05/05/2025 19:08

I predict your DD a lifetime of frustration having to correct pronunciation and spelling of her name. Choose another name.

CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 19:11

Surely Ayla. Unless I’ve got the wrong pronounciation?

MoistVonL · 05/05/2025 19:11

I know two girls called Ayla and both pronounce it Eye-La.

They are of mixed Turkish heritage (one has a Turkish mum, the other a Turkish Dad). I don't know if that makes a difference to the pronunciation.

Ayla

This is usually pronounced like Isla using proper Turkish pronunciation.

Balloonhearts · 05/05/2025 19:14

I can't even work out what name it is! Why saddle your child with a name that she will be having to correct when it's said and spell when it's written for the rest of her life?

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/05/2025 19:28

I know an Ayla said the way you would like - it’s a lovely name if you don’t mind the pronunciation issues (which would only happen if people read the name before hearing it said, not day to day).

LucyCheesey · 05/05/2025 19:30

Aaliyah?

Needmorelego · 05/05/2025 19:33

@Annoy2312 I don't get how you are pronouncing it.
People are suggesting Ayla but I would say that as Ay (as in "I") la.
But you are saying the name you like is Ale (like the drink) la.
So totally different.
What do you want the name to sound like?

PinkStarsandBlackWalls · 05/05/2025 19:33

Aila

Aaliyah?

If you are going for a pronunciation of ‘a-leah this is how I would spell it

MoistVonL · 05/05/2025 19:49

LucyCheesey · 05/05/2025 19:30

Aaliyah?

I know an Aaliya too: Ah-LEE-ya

For what it's worth, the Hebrew girls' name Ayla is pronounced the way you described (ALE-ah). It's sometimes also transliterated as Ela, but I suspect that might be frequently confused with Ella in English. I've generally heard the Turkish name Ayla - spelled Ajla in parts of the Balkans - pronounced like Isla (EYE-la).

Zeitumschaltung · 05/05/2025 20:17

Aila

loropianalover · 05/05/2025 20:18

Aila

BarbaraVineFan · 05/05/2025 20:19

You could go for Eyla? Or Aila?

PenguinLover24 · 05/05/2025 20:29

A friend's wee girl spells it Aila so I would go with Aila or Ayla x

Iwon · 05/05/2025 20:40

Ayla

ArminTamzerian · 05/05/2025 20:42

LucyCheesey · 05/05/2025 19:30

Aaliyah?

That's not even close
