Sister for Joseph

Hiya everyone,
So I am due a baby girl in a few weeks time and we are super stuck on names. We already have a little boy called Joseph and so would like to avoid names beginning with J.
Both me and DH prefer classic names and have the following shortlist but have some doubts surrounding them:
Charlotte - I don’t like the shortenings and it’s almost guaranteed to be shortened, also maybe too popular??
Matilda - quite popular and not sure if it would suit an adult?
Eloise - growing popularity?
Middle name will be Elizabeth. Please can you give me your opinions on the above names and I would love to hear your suggestions.
Thank you so much!

A friend of ours has a Joseph. They also have Martha, Maggie, Jennifer and Florence.

I like all your choices. My favourite is Charlotte but I’ve never known a Charlotte be anything other than Charlotte unless it’s been a purposeful choice and eg introduced as Lottie.

SlagPit · 27/04/2025 08:28

Hannah or Martha seem to fit and go with Elizabeth.

PerkyPearlHedgehog · 27/04/2025 09:05

Thank you for the replies. None have jumped out at me as yet although I’m glad to hear Charlotte isn’t always automatically shortened. X

I have a Joseph. Our girls shortlist was Dorothea (we were going to go with Thea but actually our daughter would make a brilliant Dot), Susannah (shortened to Zannah), Emmeline, Lillian and Sophia.

Charlotte is beautiful though. I'd go with your first choice.

Why not Elizabeth as her first name? I have two friends who don’t shorten theirs.

All 3 are nice. Personally I quite like Charley for a girl (not so keen on Lottie) but I'm not so keen on the shorter versions of Matilda. Eloise is my favourite on your list, but I'm not sure about the sound of Eloise Elizabeth.

Traditional girls names which aren't overly popular (as you seem to want to avoid this) and go with both Joseph and the middle name Elizabeth:-

Alice Elizabeth
Anna Elizabeth
Hannah Elizabeth
Lucy Elizabeth
Louise Elizabeth (perhaps a better combination than Eloise Elizabeth? Obviously it's up to you though).

I immediately thought of Amelia, not sure why. Really love charlotte, I know one who’s name is never shortened.

Thank you so much for all these replies!
I really like Beatrice but DH vetoed that as he doesn’t like how it looks written down.
Lucy Elizabeth is beautiful - probably my favourite suggested so far. I agree with the PP about Eloise Elizabeth maybe sounding a bit much. Grateful for any other suggestions x

I like all your name ideas. I do know teen Charlottes who’ve chosen to go by Charlie. I also know an Eloise who is always known as Ellie - if that bothers you? Matilda suits an adult imo.

Lucy Elizabeth is beautiful.

I also really like Emily and Sophie.

I have a friend who's DH & PIL insisted on them using a name used by oldest sons in their family for generations. She hated it, but then I pointed out that they could use a shortened version or, (as her BIL does), use her DS's 2nd name. It's not this, but say, if it was 'Peregrine' it could be shortened to 'Perry'.

You also need to think about how the name would sound in a regional accent. My parents were keen on calling me Theresa, until someone pointed out that, in a broad Cornish accent, that would turn into 'Treeserrr' 😂

Iloveyoubut · 27/04/2025 13:08

Something with three syllables sounds right when you say it.

Mary … (sorry, I’ll get my coat) 🤣
