Hi, I’m due early May and I still haven’t landed on a name.
These two are my current girl shortlist.

Maisie is ok for a toddler. Alba better for a lifetime.

Dr Teddy 😂surely he’ll revert to his full name Edward to be taken seriously.

The Teddy at my daughter's nursery doesn't have a full name, Edward or anything else, to revert to. Teddy is his full name.

Mairead is not a nice name, and is very dated.

I think Mairead is lovely!

I'm not a Gaelic speaker but I think Alba is pronounced H-Alba - it's not as straightforward as it looks. Just worth considering.

I'm not a Gealic speaker either but am Scottish and have never heard this.

There's a Gaelic TV channel called Alba which is pronounced "Al-a-bah" but there's definitely no H sound in it,

Maisie is sweet as a nick name for Mary.

I don't find Alba attractive, sorry.

Exactly, same as the political party, tv channel, various companies

I get it's a girls name in Spain and Italy but I don't think it works in Scotland.

You're kidding, there are hundreds of Albas in Scotland! There are also a few Caledonias and Scotias, as well as some just named Scotland. We're a very patriotic country!

Emanwenym · 05/04/2025 16:14

@user1492757084 , Maisie is from Margaret not Mary.

If you say so.

Scotia is a Glasgow pub who'd want to be called that?

Of the two, Alba

Maisie is a bit too twee and also v overdone a while back. May is nice

Aphra?

SallyWD · 05/04/2025 21:52

I really dislike Maisie. It's so cutesy.

@user1492757084 , Maisie is from Margaret not Mary.

It’s traditionally short for either - it’s a version of May which is a pet form of Mary. I think it was more common in Scotland as a short form of Margaret.

SmoothEncounter · 05/04/2025 23:52

connection to the now deceased Alex Salmond’s independence party would really put me off Alba.
Maisie is a bit twee but it’s better than Alba.

LilacPony · 05/04/2025 23:57

What about Amal ?

soontobeamama · 06/04/2025 08:34

Alba
