Is this TOO old-fashioned?

Is the name 'Christopher' a bit too old-fashioned and Boomer-ish? Generally I like 'classic' names but I guess that some can be a bit much...

I quite like it - I like Christy as a nn over Kit and Topher which are try hard (and Chris, who is a mechanic aged 55)

Paul2023 · 27/03/2025 23:09

I went to school with loads of Christopher’s, Chris’. So it was popular until the 1980s.I think the name has fizzled out but it would
be nice for it to make a return!

Berlinlover · 27/03/2025 23:09

Christopher is a beautiful name.

louderthan · 27/03/2025 23:14

I love it. I really want to bring all the 80s names back. Chris, James, Andrew, John, Robert, Robin, William etc. Bet you’d never meet a kid these days called Kevin, Gavin or Brian either…

ILoveAnOwl · 27/03/2025 23:18

I've never known a Chris who wasn't an absolute knob. I'd avoid if I were you.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/03/2025 23:24

No, Christopher is classic. Chris, as a short form, sounds dated now (I cannot imagine a little Chris) but Kit is a more modern shortening which feels fresh. Christopher nn Kit is lovely.

Scissor · 27/03/2025 23:27

The youngest Boomers will be 61 this year so that's nobody in their 50's.

There's Chris's of all the genders in all the generations, like Alex's.

Just choose a name that suits you and your baby.

That's a bit harsh, two of the nicest guys I know are Chris's

AliBaliBee1234 · 28/03/2025 00:47

A girl i watch on tiktok, Vick a boo or something 😂🙈 called her little boy Christopher (nickname Chrissy) and it's made me really like it! Never a name i'd have considered but due a comeback I say.

Swearwolf · 28/03/2025 06:34

I think it’s dated, I’m 40 and there were multiple Christophers at school. There does seem to be a trend for those 1980s baby names among families from Eastern Europe at our school - I know a few little Roberts, Davids etc. so he wouldn’t stand out I don’t think.

TappyGilmore · 28/03/2025 06:44

Well all of the Christophers I know are my own age - late 1970s to early-mid 1980s births - I’m sure many of those would love being thought of as boomers. I think it was also quite popular for some time after that. We did actually have one in our antenatal group so he’d be 15 now.

I’d say it’s timeless more than anything. I think it’s a better option than something that’s overly popular right now, even if it’s a classic name.

CheeseyOnionPie · 27/03/2025 20:05

Can’t go wrong with Christopher! As long as it’s not shortened to Topher…

I agree on Topher. Sounds like a penis slang word or something to me.

Christopher is solid though and I like Kit as a nickname for it rather than it being used as a standalone name on a birth certificate.

Georgie308 · 28/03/2025 06:55

Forgot to add I was born in v late eighties if it helps

Longma · 28/03/2025 06:56

YourAmberFawn · 27/03/2025 20:18

lol that’s your experience! I was just sharing mine!!!

I know 3 Christophers - all 35+

No where near boomer age if 35!
Boomers are 60-80 ish

Bluelavenders · 28/03/2025 07:47

i feel it’s dated to 40-50 year olds. I know lots of Christophers in that age range. I don’t know any under 20!

Emilyschinchilla · 28/03/2025 07:50

I thought you were going to say something like ‘Horatio’! Not the totally normal name ‘Christopher’.

Bobbieiris · 28/03/2025 07:50

I love a simple classic name , I think they’re the best for boys really! I also love the names Thomas, James and Alexander ☺️

SquigglePigs · 28/03/2025 08:53

Not at all. It was on our top 3 shortlist for a boy before we found out 6 yr old DD was going to be a girl.

Respectornot · 28/03/2025 08:55

I've know Christopher's of all ages. A classic

Read my previous comments above in regards to age.

Youngest is 35, other two are a lot older - hence the plus

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 28/03/2025 10:51

I think it's pretty timeless. I wouldn't have used it myself because of the religious background to the meaning (I'm not religious at all and it would have felt disrespectful) but I do like it very much as a collection of sounds, and for the associations with people I've known.

Birdist · 28/03/2025 10:56

Heavens I was expecting Aelfric or something 😂

StamppotAndGravy · 28/03/2025 11:18

It's probably not quite as bad now, but my cousin hated being Christopher. He's never ever the only Chris in any setting and even if you chose to call him Kit or Chrissy, he'll be Chris 90% of the time. He finds it bland to the point of tedium and unfortunately has an equally uninspiring middle name.

Coffeeforayear · 28/03/2025 11:24

I would say its a timeless classic. I know some of my age and older and some much younger
As long as you accept he is going to be shortened to Chris.
Know a couple of mums who still call their teens Christopher and I think surely its shortened by everyone else.

HugoYorway · 28/03/2025 11:41

too old-fashioned and Boomer-ish? Ageist or what?

It's a classic and there are 1000s of them who are Generation X. It was very popular in the 1970s.

I hate the term 'boomer'. Baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964, so will be 60-79 now.
