Is this TOO old-fashioned?

Is the name 'Christopher' a bit too old-fashioned and Boomer-ish? Generally I like 'classic' names but I guess that some can be a bit much...

It’s a classic. It’s just not a completely timeless one, but then few names technically are if you are in England (you are basically limited to William, Thomas, Edward, James, Michael, Alexander, George, Daniel, Joseph and David which all never go out of the Top 100 afaik).

But nor do I find Christopher especially dated - it’s like other Biblical names like Matthew, John etc in that it rises and falls in popularity but there’s always a few about of different ages. Christopher also has the benefit of trendy nn Kit rather than Chris, which has made the name seem cooler again.

Yes extremely boomerish. Grown man married with adult kids and a drinking problem comes to mind.

Agree

Anycheeeeese · 27/03/2025 21:47

Lovely name, think it'll undergo a bit of a renaissance.

PrettayGood · 27/03/2025 21:48

It’s perfectly inoffensive. Who doesn’t know a Chris or 3?

DonningMyHardHat · 27/03/2025 21:59

Yep, there was at least six in my year at secondary school in the early 00s. My year 1 has a Christopher in his class too so I don’t think it’s gone completely out of fashion!

JoyousEagle · 27/03/2025 22:00

Love it - this was one my shortlist if either of my DDs had been a boy.

Bathnet · 27/03/2025 22:01

It’s lovely

nonmerci99 · 27/03/2025 22:02

I (child of the 80s) went to school with about 100 Chrises, so it’d be a no from me.

FondantFancyFan · 27/03/2025 22:03

There's a Christopher in dc's class who goes by the nickname of Kit which is very cool.

That's like Teddy nowadays!

Namechange6578 · 27/03/2025 22:09

I think it's quite classic and won't outdate. Although my DM and MIL are both Chris /Christine so wasn't for me 😂
I'd only pick it if you also like Chris tho as PP have said

suburburban · 27/03/2025 22:12

I think it’s a fabulous name

Mistyglade · 27/03/2025 22:12

It’s a lovely classy classic name.

TubeScreamer · 27/03/2025 22:16

It’s lovely

merryhouse · 27/03/2025 22:16

(now wondering if @JasmineAllen has met my son...)

It wasn't as widespread as when I was younger, but he wasn't the only one in the school.

Flowersforcharlie · 27/03/2025 22:18

My son is called Christopher - now aged 22. Our other top choices were either Oscar or Theo which, at the time, we thought were more “unusual” names - compared to the classic Christopher. It turns out those names were far more common than Christopher in his age group anyway!

ApolloandDaphne · 27/03/2025 22:23

It doesn't seem old fashioned at all to me. I find all the Archies and Alfred's horribly old fashioned but not Christopher.

OneBadKitty · 27/03/2025 22:24

Not met a child called Christopher for a long time! It's a very 70s/80s name.

You could have Kipper as a nickname- like in the Oxford Reading Tree! 😁

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/03/2025 22:35

I know a lot more Christophers in their 30s and 40s than boomers.

It's a nice name.

LeaveALittleNote · 27/03/2025 22:52

I like the name Christopher and I agree with a PP who suggests a nickname of Kit.

minnienono · 27/03/2025 22:55

I know a 2 year old Christopher, it’s not that popular at the moment but just like all traditional boys names, it never disappears completely, there’s a David at toddler group too.

Needspaceforlego · 27/03/2025 23:01

It's a fairly timeless classic name to me
Although all seem to end up as Chris.

Coffeeishot · 27/03/2025 23:04

Mylegishangingoff · 27/03/2025 19:56

I like it. My teenage crush in secondary was a Christopher. I think it's one of those names thats always around and doesn't go in or out of fashion iykwim.

Oh mine too, I see him around occasionally and he is still very handsome !

Anyway, I think it Is a great name and probably due a return.

😀

Chris hangs out with Dave, Gary and Mark.

CarpetKnees · 27/03/2025 23:08

Whereas there probably were more Christophers born in the 50s, 60, and 70s, than later, it is one of those names that has been used in every decade.
I know (or have known) Christophers born in every decade.
