Why are boys names so difficult???

WillisTi · 20/03/2025 21:37

We’ve got a little boy called Oscar, the only boys name we could agree upon at the time! We have another boy on the way now and can’t agree on a name at all!

The current list is:

  • Charlie Willis
  • Otis Willis
  • Jasper Willis
  • Otto Willis
  • Oliver Willis
  • Alfie Willis
  • Toby Willis

What does everyone think? Any names we might be missing?

Thanks

I really don’t like Otis, but the rest are fine! Don’t stress about it, and see what grabs you when he’s born.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/03/2025 22:00

I love Toby - great name - classic but modern sounding and familiar but not dated / trendy or overused.

Charlie or Jasper are great too.

Oliver is nice but sooo popular round us

Alfie is nice but a bit “cute” for me

Otis is ok and I don’t like Otto.

Jasper is a great name, rate around my area too!

SwornToSilence · 20/03/2025 22:26

Jude

MissedItByThisMuch · 20/03/2025 22:32

Assuming Willis is your surname I’d cross Otis off the list as Otis Willis sounds awkward to me (if Willis is a middle name it’s fine) otherwise they are all perfectly fine, reasonable common these days, names.

Toby is my favourite, followed by Jasper and Oliver.

They're all popular dog names where i live.
Oliver is nice, but not with Oscar. I'd probably go with Toby from that list.

LoudPlumDog · 21/03/2025 08:19

Oscar and Toby.

Fontainebleau007 · 21/03/2025 08:32

Toby

CarrotParrot · 21/03/2025 08:35

Toby

Amyjade2022 · 21/03/2025 11:49

Toby gets my vote!

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 21/03/2025 11:55

Jasper is lovely.

I would avoid another O name.

How about Luca?

I really like traditional names like James and Benjamin.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/03/2025 14:22

i don't like Otis, and i'd avoid using another O name
Alfie isn't my cup of tea.

Xander?

BatsInSpring · 21/03/2025 20:21

Toby is great but I'd want to use Tobias. Jasper is a cool name too.

WillisTi · 21/03/2025 20:44

Looks like Toby is popular! We would use the full name Tobias.

I don’t love Otis or Otto, not least of all as they share the same initial.

The rest are all fine: I would maybe add:

Xander
Lucas
Finlay
Harris

I agree I think it’s so hard to pick boy names. It took me ages! I finally settled on Xander, although it took us until he was 2 weeks old to choose!

The problem with naming forums, although yes they can be helpful when you’re stuck - they can also be extremely negative. I honestly think having strangers weigh in on my babies name made the naming process so much harder. I felt like I needed 100% approval before giving her a name.

With that being said, If you’re already having a hard time choosing, I’d try not to listen to too many people’s opinions because it can truly get overwhelming.

Trust yourself and remember that only yours and your DPs opinions matter. You’ll never get 100% approval on a name - and that is the beauty of names!

timoteigirl · 21/03/2025 21:45

Toby seems to go best with Oscar but does it need to go? The others seem different style especially Jasper. What about Wesley? Although with Willis as middle name doesn't really go.

They used to be, not anymore.

Firebird83 · 21/03/2025 22:36

Most people won’t know who he is, but Toby Willis is the name of someone who was on a US reality TV show who is in jail for abusing his kids. I personally would avoid that name.

shoopshoopdedoo · 21/03/2025 23:33

Charlie is my favourite. Love Oliver too, but perhaps a bit too similar to Oscar.

Jasper is well-loved by Mumsnet, but is one of my least favourite names, so I’d personally avoid that one from your list! Also not super keen on Otis or Otto.

LilacPony · 21/03/2025 23:47

Sorry, Oscar and Charlie made me think of the phonetic alphabet so I wouldn’t use those two together personally.
But, yes my goodness boy names are so much harder!! Jasper, Alfie or Toby from your list. Good luck!

mathanxiety · 22/03/2025 00:25

I think Jasper amd Oliver are great. Toby too. All three flow well with Willis.
