Gia as a full name, not short for Gianna.
Also with no Italian heritage.

A new name has been thrown in the ring just when we thought we were settled with Lara. Always hard to tell if it’s just the hormones making me like names at this stage 🤣

Currently thinking something along the lines of Gia Rosalie

Last name is one syllable.

DH is still team Lara but I feel Gia just has a certain charm.

I’m team Lara! Although Gia is fine if you love it.

I think it’s nice but there’s a lot to be said for a name that everyone how to say. And Mia can be said like the space station or to rhyme with fire so can Gia?

Love it. Wanted to use it myself but it didn't suit my girls

Thelondonone · 12/03/2025 17:45

I believe it’s an Indian name and you do know that Mia and therefore gia can be pronounced g-a or gy-a. And if you don’t know that, then go with Lara.

SleepyDormouse59 · 12/03/2025 17:49

I would spell it Gaia. Would that have the same pronunciation?

RuthW · 12/03/2025 17:49

How do you pronounce it?

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 12/03/2025 17:53

Sorry that’s the wine…I’ll give it another go.

The name Mia can be pronounced like the space station and Mia Farrow.

it can also be pronounced like My-a to rhyme with fire.

can Gia be pronounced in more than one way?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/03/2025 17:53

How would you be intending to pronounce it? I'm guessing 'jee-ah'? In Italian the 'Gia' bit of the name 'Gianna' doesn't sound like that. It's just a 'jah' sound. 'Gianna' is pronounced 'Jannah'. The i just makes the g into a soft g.

Have you seen the film Gia? Very tragic.

IdaGlossop · 12/03/2025 18:18

Italian speakers will read it as 'already', which may or may not bother you.

PatsFruitCake · 12/03/2025 18:19

Would it be pronounced jeer? I prefer Lara TBH.

abracadabra1980 · 12/03/2025 18:21

Not keen, sorry.

I’ve met loads of Mias that rhyme with fire. Some in the same class as the other pronunciation.

IWishIWasABaller · 12/03/2025 18:23

I love it it's one of my favorite girls names and I never got to use it for any of my daughters unfortunately

jackspratswife01 · 12/03/2025 18:57

Hi sorry to be negative but the first thing I thought if with Gia was garlic puree ...

KayEmAy · 12/03/2025 19:01

Adore the name Gia, I think it's pretty and chic! I also love the nickname Gigi if that's something she likes.

Chuchoter · 12/03/2025 19:02

I just associate it with Gia Carangi.

It's an ok name but Lara is much nicer.

Fayruh · 12/03/2025 19:02

I love both Gia or Gio!

Yeah neither! I didn’t even think pronunciation would be an issue!

To me, Mia and Gia only have one pronunciation 🤣

Yes, I’m sceptical about the person who’s met “loads” of Mia’s pronounced Maya.
i quite like Gia. And Gia Milinovich is great.

I have I promise! I am a supply teacher so that helps. In the last six months I’ve also encountered an Envee, an Khalessi and a Crystal-Jewel.

Alaya is another one. Some of them are Ah-lay-a. Some are a-lee-a.

Emanwenym · 12/03/2025 22:32

Team Lara.
Gia seems faddy and a bit made up. It's 'Ja' in Italian and means already.

Alaya is A-lie-a here.

I first thought gee ah and me ah. But Mia could be My ah so logically gia could be Guy ah.

OP, which pronunciation did you expect?
