Gia as a full name, not short for Gianna.
Also with no Italian heritage.

A new name has been thrown in the ring just when we thought we were settled with Lara. Always hard to tell if it’s just the hormones making me like names at this stage 🤣

Currently thinking something along the lines of Gia Rosalie

Last name is one syllable.

DH is still team Lara but I feel Gia just has a certain charm.

Funny how pronunciation varies so much in different areas - I've only ever heard Mia as Mee-ah and Gia as Jee-ah (similar sound to Leah)

Maya and Gaia are totally different sounding names.

Also only ever heard Lara as rhyming with Clara, Tara, Zara etc, never as Laura which, again, is a totally different name where I live

saraclara · 12/03/2025 22:45

I'd just think that you'd spelled Gaia wrongly/yooneekly. It wouldn't occur to me to rhyme it with Mia.

JuneySunshine · 13/03/2025 10:19

Wouldn't be confident in pronouncing it and prefer Lara (or Gina)

I would say the same

Sarah2891 · 13/03/2025 10:34

Gia is a lovely name

ginasevern · 13/03/2025 11:04

It means "already" in Italian. As in, I've already done the washing up. Not sure if you knew that.

Emanwenym · 13/03/2025 11:36

Gia Abbastanza has a nice ring to it

jjeoreo · 13/03/2025 22:36

I think it's very pretty and very cool

Middleagedstriker · 13/03/2025 22:42

I would read it as Gear (as in have you got any gear? whem wanting to go and get wasted)

YourAmberFawn · 13/03/2025 22:52

So Gia has proven to be very marmite… 🤣

Gia as in G-ah - I am so surprised that there’s even a discourse on pronunciation! That hadn’t even crossed my mind.

We are fairly settled on Gia now - we are leaning towards Gia Liliana as her first and middle.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply ❤️

Go for it. I don't like either of them but I'll probably never meet you or her.

sel2223 · 14/03/2025 00:14

I'm really surprised that there are people looking at Gia and pronouncing it Gear!

I have only ever heard it pronounced with a 'j' sound like Gino or Gina. Is it a shortened version of Gianna?

Bluhdyvalentinemy · 14/03/2025 00:15

It sounds like some kind of vaginal pessary to me

GildedRage · 14/03/2025 00:18

Sounds like a car
Volkswagen Gia

SnowFrogJelly · 14/03/2025 00:52

Awful

Top Gia

Namechangedforthis25 · 14/03/2025 01:10

How do you say it

i thought it was like Gaya

if it rhymes with Mia, it sounds like gear

lara all the way. I have a Lara so am biased but love it

tellmesomethingtrue · 14/03/2025 01:27

I would have no idea how to say this names.

sel2223 · 14/03/2025 03:36

Sorry your name choice is getting so much hate OP, people can be so rude when hidden behind a keyboard but that's the MN baby names forum I'm afraid.

What matters is if you and your husband like it! In real life, you'll only ever have to tell people the pronunciation once then it'll stick.

FWIW, I like both Gia (jee-ah) and Lara.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Same here.

The only person I’ve ever met who pronounces Lara like Laura, is my North American mil and I’m fairly sure she does that to irritate me.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/03/2025 20:55

I like Gia but I prefer Lara

You’re thinking of già. The accent makes a difference. Italians wouldn’t use Gia as a diminutive of Gianna if it was the same word.

Zeitumschaltung · 14/03/2025 21:03

It’s pronounced Ghia.
The film’s quite good.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 14/03/2025 21:31

I’m afraid I see Group Internal Audit
