What do you think of Charis?

...for a girl. It means 'grace' in Greek. Think it's pronounced 'Karis'.

Is it too weird? Will people call her 'CH-aris' or spell her name incorrectly all the time?

The other option is 'Edith' (Edie for short).

Our surname is Emmanuel so can't have names ending in 'a' or 'er' (surprisingly few girls' names don't end like that, but good suggestions welcome too).

that is Charis...Edith is a pretty name

TwoFirTreesToday · 12/05/2008 15:36

great name, I really like it; as long as your surname isnt Harris

TinkerbellesMum · 12/05/2008 16:34

I've had the name Charis on my list for about ten years - it's Myrrdin (Merlin)'s mother and The Lady of the Lake in The Pendragon Cycle. I had to convince Mum that if I use it, I won't be using my surname! (I'll leave that out, but I'm sure you can work it out)

It is pronounced with a hard "ch" as in Loch.

It is a totally different name to the similar sounding Welsh name.

umm when i saw the name Charis, i thought maybe you wanted to rhyme it with Paris. And I was like ...ummm...really? but when i read your post it made better sense.

what about evilyn ?

because karis/karys also sort of reminds people of the brand kerastase of hair products? i don 't know...please don't take it personally i'm from texas and i'm probably pronouncing your names all wrong in my head.

Charis is lovely!!! I would pronounce it 'right' with K, but then again I'm Northern European.

Alishanty · 12/05/2008 20:59

Nice name but I would associate it with cannabis. Depends on whether that bothers you or not.

2point4kids · 12/05/2008 21:02

I read it a 'ch' aris i am afraid!
i like carys as a spelling of it

Love Edith and Edie though (altho Edie does remind me a bit of Edie McCredie who is quite annoying)

laidbackinengland · 12/05/2008 21:02

Agree with Alishanty - conjours up the idea of a big lump of cannabis whe spely Charis - but still a pretty name.

Sidge · 12/05/2008 21:03

I think Charis is beautiful, but then I would as it's my daughter's middle name.

Mind you a few relatives thought it was pronounced "shar-ees" until we corrected them.

Idobelieveinfairies · 12/05/2008 21:03

Charis is lovely, DD1 has a friend called Charis. There are a few 'Carys's' around too!
(of course they are pronounced the same)

I have a Cerys, but people don't seem to be able to remember it so call her Carys instead!

Hulababy · 12/05/2008 21:06

Not keen on Charis; sorry.

I really like the name Edith though; quite liking some of these older names coming back.

I lso think the name Grace is nice itself too.

I like the name, but don't like the spelling - looks like a model of car to me, sorry
