What do you think of Charis?

...for a girl. It means 'grace' in Greek. Think it's pronounced 'Karis'.

Is it too weird? Will people call her 'CH-aris' or spell her name incorrectly all the time?

The other option is 'Edith' (Edie for short).

Our surname is Emmanuel so can't have names ending in 'a' or 'er' (surprisingly few girls' names don't end like that, but good suggestions welcome too).

What SoupDragon said.

dd1's middle name is Carys. I wish quite a lot now that it was her first name. Love it.

i love it, sounds and looks lovely.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2008 18:23

Oh I know, Procrastinating. there is, of course, nothing wrong with unusual names but you have to be prepared for mispellings and mispronunciations.

Mind you, DS2 has a ordinary name spelt the normal way and it is spelt incorrectly about 90% of the time. [sigh]

janeite · 11/05/2008 18:23

We found boys' names easy - but had two girls! We were still arguing over what to call dd2 when I was in the birthing pool!

cyteen · 11/05/2008 18:25

Boys' names are a nightmare.

I've only ever heard of it in terms of cannabis.

MerryMarigold · 11/05/2008 18:48

mmmm...booge, not heard of that one! thanks for enlightening me. I'm sure that's pronounced with a 'ch'!

OP posts:
cyteen · 11/05/2008 19:00

Yeah, sorry, I was going to mention that. And yes, the ch is pronounced there.

dizzydixies · 11/05/2008 19:05

I was at uni with a LOVELY girl called Charis and always thought it was a beautiful name

can also be spelt Carys, welsh version

procrastinatingparent · 11/05/2008 20:09

cannabis! Now that was something I didn't know ...

Don't let it put you off though, Merry.

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2008 20:11

Edie is nice. Charis isn't

gracepaley · 11/05/2008 20:18

I love them both.

Clary · 11/05/2008 20:23

I like both but agree re ignorant (!) people spelling Charis wrong.

Edith is a lovely name . Not totally sure about Edith Emmanuel tho. Oh what a tricky surname!

How about Charlotte? Juliette? Helen? mm it's hard isn't it!

DiscoDizzy · 11/05/2008 20:32

I don't like either, but i do like Grace.

Spidermama · 11/05/2008 20:33

I guess you know by now this is the name for a lovely pure type of marajuana. I knew a girl called this and made the mistake of mentioning the other meaning to her mum. She was not a fan of the stuff and hugely unimpressed. [shame]

SniffyHock · 11/05/2008 20:36

I love Edie Emmanuel!! I really like the initial thing.

princessmel · 11/05/2008 20:37

I read it as 'ch-aris'!! I know a Carys. I like Karis, I think.

ButterflyMcQueen · 11/05/2008 20:43

charis is lovely - stick with it

do not worry re spelling - my dd has a name which is usually spelled one way but can be one of 3

I actually chose the russian spelling of her name - more often associated with the boys version

She loves the way it is spelled although once a chav asked her why her name was ' {silly pronounciation') buut at 13 it has never caused issues

squanderedzeitgeist · 12/05/2008 02:53

Not really my cup o char...
