Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

Indifferent

Oxgodby · 02/03/2025 11:27

No. It was the overwhelmingly overused name in my home country in the few years around my birth year, along with another very similar name it’s often confused with, there were five others with my name in my class all through primary, and I grew up experiencing myself as generic because of it.

My parents chose it for exactly that reason, because it was generic, like magnolia paint. They were horrified when I turned out not to fit within their definition of ‘like other people’.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 02/03/2025 11:27

No. Dislike my first name. It is a name in it's own right but often used as a shortening for a longer one. So was assumed a lot (especially at school) that my "proper" name was the longer one. Absolutely hate my middle name so using that was never an option.

Lucyaugust2007 · 02/03/2025 11:28

Only the shortened version of it.
I wish my parents had just called me the shortened version. Hate having to use my full name when filling in forms, booking appointments etc.

HarryVanderspeigle · 02/03/2025 11:29

I didn't growing up, as it is a standard, sensible name and I wanted something much more exotic. Now I am grateful for my dull name and not be called Anastasia when we have no family links to Russia, even though it is a much more beautiful name!

MWNA · 02/03/2025 11:31

I like my name a lot. And one of the shortenings. (There's a few). It's a relatively classic name.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/03/2025 11:31

Yep, it's lovely. Easy to spell and pronounce. Relatively uncommon (at least in my age group) yet well recognised.

Togglebullets · 02/03/2025 11:32

Yes! My name is an unusual name that, for English people, isn't pronounced as it's spelt. Something that people make much of on here as being a huge issue.
I do have to tell people how to pronounce it but it's only 2 syllables so it's not hard.
I find it a nice ice breaker as people often ask me it's origin.
I also find it a good arsehole filter - people will out themselves quite quickly by being rude about it or refusing to pronounce it correctly. Given that most people are generally decent though this doesn't happen often...

SushiWarrior · 02/03/2025 11:33

Didn’t like it as a kid/teen as it was more unusual and didn’t ‘fit’ with the other name trends of the mid 90’s girls (Kirsty, Amy, Kelly, Emily etc) as it’s longer and more consonant dense.

Really like it as an adult though.

LollyWillow · 02/03/2025 11:34

I absolutely hate my name. It has a long and short version. I can just about cope with the long version and this is what all my friends use, but my family insist on using the short version and I find it unbearable; it's like hearing nails on a blackboard.

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/03/2025 11:37

I adore my name, both the full version and the abbreviation I use interchangeably. When meeting people for the first time they invariably say what a beautiful name it is, and how well it suits me.

bomalan · 02/03/2025 11:37

No, mine is really boring and I haven't even got a middle name to spice it up.

I'm 35 and all the other people I know with the same name are in their 40's/50's.

It's just so bland. The other options they had for me were also all v boring, so it was never going to end well 🤣

Movinghouseatlast · 02/03/2025 11:37

I'm kind of indifferent, but I really like a different version of it with another letter added.

I loathe the diminutive I get called that I've never asked to be called!

EmeraldDreams73 · 02/03/2025 11:37

I don't like mine at all.

Both first and middle name are boring and were overused (always together) in the 70s. There were several my names in every class at school. Even now I have 17 people with the same name in my phone contacts.

Almost all of those have the same middle name as me. The others have the only other option. 🙄🙄 I made an effort to give my dds more unusual names, although I did make sure they weren't hard to spell or likely to be bullied for them.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/03/2025 11:38

I don’t dislike it but it was a Top 5 name and so I meet a lot of other women of my age with my name and always have, there are at least 2 of us in several of my friend groups and I was once in a meeting at work which was almost comical as 5 out of the 7 people attending all had my name! I don’t like my surname much so I suppose the fact I am so often having to be distinguished from the others with my name by my surname makes me like my first name a bit less!

Ferrazzuoli · 02/03/2025 11:40

Yes I really like my name. It's the kind of name that everyone has heard of without being too common, both when I was growing up and now. And I think it has a nice sound to it.

Cattery · 02/03/2025 11:41

Mine is a beautiful classic name but I don’t think it’s ever suited me

BobbyBiscuits · 02/03/2025 11:43

I don't really think the full version of my first name suits me at all. It took a while to settle on a short version that feels more like 'me'.
If someone were to call the full version out to me I wouldn't turn round, unless I was in a medical setting as I don't really recognise it as my name anymore!
Also people sometimes annoy me a little if they don't know me, here me saying it and ask 'is that short for.."Roberta'?' I'm always like, 'yeah, that's it.' Even though it isn't?! It's like I don't want them to know. Weird of me I guess.

I love my middle name as it really unique and cute.
Part of me wishes I'd just used that as my normal name from when I was a kid. But if I changed now people would think I was having a severe identity crisis!

This put me off Elizabeth and Isabella when I was having a girl to be honest.

Love Elizabeth but hate Liz; love Isabella but hate Izzy.

I love my name!
It has historical significance and I was always the only one at school/work with it. Its become more common in recent years, but still uncommon.

My parents gave me a more common middle name, because if I didn't like my first name, I could use that instead. My middle name is similar to Victoria, Elizabeth, Rebecca- so could be Beth, Vicky, Becca, Liz etc. I prefer my actual name though.

richardosmanstrousers · 02/03/2025 11:46

Why don't you change it?

I like my name but I did legally change it to the 'short' version I was mostly known as. The name on my original BC I hate.

FeatherFace · 02/03/2025 11:47

Well, it's OK but I'm called Lily May Surname ...

And I'm in my 50s.

So of course everyone I meet via work or whatever expects me to be about 18 and do a double take that I'm not

I've asked my mum if she actually saw to the future when every girl was called Lily May and she assures me she didn't Grin

Barleysugar86 · 02/03/2025 11:47

Indifferent to mine, as others have said. Very common for my birth year, always others with my name so I am first name and an initial. As a name itself it is quite nice I suppose but it's so common in itself it is boring.

PLHJ84 · 02/03/2025 11:48

No, hate it. Most popular name for about 8 years running - 3 or 4 others in most classes when i got to secondary

Ladamesansmerci · 02/03/2025 11:49

Mine is Louise (middle name Elizabeth). I like it! I don't meet many other Louise's as it was mostly a middle name in my era.

I think it's timeless and pretty.
