Do you like it? Probably will be called Nick most of the time. I have had a few comments that it’s “dated” so wanted some impartial views.

I love the name so much, it’s always been my favourite boys name.

I have an 18yo Nicholas.

We called him Nicky as a baby/toddler then Nic onwards. I don't like the spelling Nick (there is no k in Nicholas) and everyone calls him Nic. I love it and it suits him.

It's an adaptable name - a Nicholas could be a solicitor, a teacher, an athlete. Love it!

ramonaqueenbee · 28/02/2025 00:04

Love it - know one in his 20s (nn Nick) one who is 18 (nn Nic) and one who is 10 (in Nicky). Patron saint of sailors ❤️

And a Saint, bearing gifts.

This is lovely ❤️

i did edit this, I said when you look at your baby when he’s born you’ll know his name. Good tidings to you and your bundle of love. It’s so awesome.

WellsAndThistles · 28/02/2025 01:01

I like it but the lad I was at school with (80's) used to get called knickerless 🙄

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/02/2025 01:11

Nicholas is a classic imo, although obviously far less popular than it used to be - and I think it’s a lovely name if you can get past the “knickerless” thing. But to me Nick does feel slightly dated in the same way that Chris or Mike do, yet Christopher and Michael don’t. The Biblical longer versions have enough different cultural references to feel fairly timeless, but the nicknames are a bit reminiscent of your middle aged neighbours imo.

Hence why many parents are trying to find younger/fresher sounding nicknames - Nico or Cole for Nicholas, Mica for Michael, Kit for Christopher etc. But there so many older Nick’s about (and Mikes and Chris’s) that I think for many people “Nick” will usually be the go to - the alternatives just aren’t as automatic, the parents would need to push them.

@Moveoverdarlin

And what on earth is wrong with Dave / David?

An absolute classic name!!

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/02/2025 06:51

I like Nicholas. It is classical and works internationally. I don't particularly associate it with middle aged men .

That’s true about Nico not being “automatic” so hopefully people won’t instinctively call him that.

I adore David! Cannot use it though as a very close family members name.

I don't think Nico is an obvious shortening at all, all the Nicholas' I've known are Nick. I think it's a really nice name, and nice to have a name not everyone else has. Will be fairly uncommon but easy to spell and not eyebrow raising. Perfect!

I think the trendy names of today will date a lot more than Nicholas/Nick.

glotterbug · 28/02/2025 08:42

Love the name Nicholas
Would have used it but had 2 girls.
I think if you like the name go for it!

I totally get that but then my worry is when he grows up all of his classmates and colleagues will have similar names and his will stick out!

It’s great and all the Nick’s I know are really lovely people, maybe that’s why I like it

SnoopysHoose · 28/02/2025 08:47

I know quite a few Nick/Nickys in their 20s/30s, not an old man name at all

Mulledjuice · 28/02/2025 08:47

Umbrellah · 27/02/2025 22:08

And just to get some more views (sorry!) despite the growing trend of nicknames as first names, given I really do like Nicholas too, it’s fine to call him Nicholas and then Nick as a nickname isn’t it? Rather than just Nick on his certificate.

Of course it's fine.

Nicholas on BC, I'd probably end up calling a baby Nicky, he may get shortened to Nick at school.

Lovely.

Umbrellah · 28/02/2025 08:49

Thanks all. I was fairly confident but then went down the rabbit hole of reading lots of posts on here with “cooler sounding” names and spiralled! But I’ll stick to my choice!

Nicholas is a nice name, really not a fan of Nick but love Nico x

Onlyvisiting · 28/02/2025 08:59

I like it. Personally I'd rather be dated than uber fashionable, it will age better than the rash of super popular 'modern' names!

I suppose my worry is all his colleagues/peers will have “modern” names and his will be dated given how popular the modern names are now!
