Do you like it? Probably will be called Nick most of the time. I have had a few comments that it’s “dated” so wanted some impartial views.

I love the name so much, it’s always been my favourite boys name.

Really Like Nicholas
Love Nicky
Don't mind Nico
Dislike Nick - has a mean/small sound to it.

Umbrellah · 27/02/2025 22:41

The more I type it the more I love it. Thank you everyone!

Oh personally I really do not like Nico, just Nick or Nicholas. Do you think people may shorten Nicholas to Nico?! I never thought of that!

Nico wouldn't naturally be used in English, it's a natural shortening in some other languages (i guess Spanish, Italian, Greek?)

It's popular and trendy in the UK though at the mo (similar to Enzo, Matteo etc) but far from inevitable especially if you don't use it.

I like Nicky as a shortening too. Sounds like it feels like it's the right name for you, I wouldn't overthink it.

Thank you! I’m now wondering if those called Nico are actually Nicholas or just Nico. But as you said, don’t overthink!

I only know one in his 40s, he never shortens his name.

PurpleChrayn · 27/02/2025 22:56

Knickerless.

AutumnColours9 · 27/02/2025 22:57

I like it but I would think knicker less

bonkersplonkers · 27/02/2025 22:57

Hi OP. We have a Nicholas ...shortened to...Nico ...sorry 😅 We made a conscious decision to do that though as my DH has foreign blood. I think naturally it would shorten to Nicky as a child.

Thank you!! Do you find people naturally shorten it to Nico or is that just how you introduce him? And if it’s international do you use the H or just C in his name?

@PurpleChrayn @AutumnColours9 well I'm not the only one who thought this then 😅

I am sure people will say that at school, but most names have something people will make fun of so I’m not letting that cloud my judgement!

My son's middle name is Nicholas. We hadn't thought of it until he was born (on St Nicholas's Day) and had already chosen his first name, but I then spent ages kicking myself for not thinking of it before. Never met a Nick/ Nicholas that I didn't like. Go for it!

We introduce him as both. We use Nicholas rather than Nicolas. I don't think it would naturally shorten to Nico. x

thehorsesareallidiots · 27/02/2025 23:06

A classic, and I will always have affection for it due to best boyfriend ever Nick Nelson.

TheNumberfaker · 27/02/2025 23:07

It’s a great classic name.

Darkmorningsarethepits · 27/02/2025 23:08

I like it OP! I like Nick or Nicky very much

I have never seen or heard Nicholas being shortened to Nico. I think that’s an entirely different name/cultural norm?

I hope so, I thought the same until this thread! Nothing against the name Nico it just isn’t for me/my taste. So good to know others also wouldn’t shorten it!

When you look at yourself baby you’ll baby when he’s born you’ll know his. Good luck to you and your family

Nicholas is a lovely name, whereas not many people like the shortened version. Everyone calls me by a shortened version of my name except for my DM who hates my name shortened. She used to tell my friends off for doing it and it would really embarrass me.

There’s a Nicholas and a (female) Nico in my son’s primary school class!

IdaGlossop · 27/02/2025 23:30

I was just about to make this very point. It is a classic name, with variants in Greece, Italy, France and Russia and probably others. My favourite association is with the Saki story The Lumber Room https://hackneybooks.co.uk/books/86/220/TheLumberRoom.html. The central character is a child called Nicholas, a boy of sharp intelligence whose every thought, utterance and action is a delight. Please, have your own little Nicholas.

DramaAlpaca · 27/02/2025 23:31

I love Nicholas, it must be due a revival.

MotherJessAndKittens · 27/02/2025 23:33

Love it. Would shorten to Nicky when baby. I feel nico is a name in itself so wouldn’t think of that. Like Nicola for a girl too.
