French name we'd love as much as Inès?

Hi everyone

I'm due another girl early March and we don't have a single name we both love.

Our DD is Inès (French heritage). We'd like something French that would also work here and is ideally shortish like Inès. We'd like it to complement her name if that's possible. To me, Inès was pretty but not too flowery or twee, a bit modern (but not too much so) and a bit less common compared to more classic names like Sophie and Amelie for example, although these are both beautiful names.

Thank you in advance!

Lovely name

I saw a PP mentioned Solène, choose this! I have always adored that name and sadly had forgotten it existed when naming DD.

Also love Elise and Clémence.

Am I the only one who associates Manon with watching football?

It’s interesting that Sylvie seems popular. I am in my 60s and went to primary school in France (hence most likely why I suggested upthread the “middle aged” names as I guess they were my classmates’ friends and I’ve always liked them).

So here for me - Sylvie is also of that era. Sylvie Vartan is who I think of, 1960s singer. I remember the name Sylvie being popular then. Along with Natalie, having an English name I wished I was called Natalie or Fabienne! Interesting how some names stay the course and others dont. I guess best thing is to choose what you like, and there are some fabulous French names suggestions from people on this thread!

I came across the name Alette in a book. It's French and Dutch. I think it's beautiful, very fresh and elegant. Not at all flowery or twee. Not overused.
I think Inès and Alette sound lovely together.

I didn’t know Alette. It’s beautiful. Elegant and strong, and (to my anglophone ear anyway) timeless.

I also love Sylvie. Maybe a bit old-fashioned, but in a nice way.

I love Sylvie too. Beautiful.

Alette is not a name (nor are Etoile or Belle, for that matter). Aliette is a name.

Étoile did amuse me Grin

ShannonBailey · 27/02/2025 17:39

How about Étoilette? It's French for Starlet.Wink

AuxArmesCitoyens · 27/02/2025 17:51

My favourite so far is Nanouk ☃

I actually know someone called Etoile though

AuxArmesCitoyens · 27/02/2025 19:39

I take it back. According to official stats there were 55 people called Etoile between 1900 and 2023. It is definitely a name.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 27/02/2025 20:02

I know it's been said a few times but my first thought was Anouk - my reasoning being that they are both names that are used in France but don't have the typical French feminine ending of -e, which makes them seem a bit more unusual. I also thought of Malou, but to my surprise, I looked it up and discovered that it is mainly used in Denmark, not France! (The only one I have known was English.)

deeahgwitch · 27/02/2025 20:46

I'd prefer Etoile to Étoilette.
I'd prefer to be a star than a starlet 😀
