How would you pronounce this name Kaelan or Kaylan

We have finally found the name we are wanting to call our son.

I love the spelling “Kaelan” pronounced “Kay- Lan” but I am worried people would call him “KEE-LAN”

or do we have to make it obvious for people and spell it out as “Kaylan”

Kaylan is much better than Kaelan.

Lou670 · 19/02/2025 23:01

I have only seen this name spelt Caelan and it's pronounced as you pronounce it; Kay Lan.

PrincessOfPreschool · 19/02/2025 23:07

I know a Caelan pronounced as Kay- luhn.

TrainTicket · 19/02/2025 23:07

I’ve never heard the name before but would pronounce it the way you intend to pronounce it.

CosyRoby · 19/02/2025 23:17

Kaelan I’d pronounce as Keelan
Kaylan I’d pronounce Kay - lan
If you are concerned with pronunciation I’d go with Kay lan it’s more obvious.

stanleypops66 · 19/02/2025 23:17

I pronounce it Kale-un.

HotCrossBunplease · 19/02/2025 23:24

If people say Kaelan as Kee lan it’s because they are misreading it as
Kealan.

People don’t say Rae as Ree or Mae as Mee. So you should be fine.

SkaneTos · 19/02/2025 23:27

I would be unsure of how to pronouce it, and I would ask you.

MakeOrBake · 19/02/2025 23:50

Based on a Kealan I know (in Ireland) it will be mispronounced a lot with that spelling.
People def seem to get stuck at the 'ke' part and go with Keelin.

It would prob be fine if he was clear about the pronunciation when meeting people, or corrected errors but he doesn't 🤔

BellissimoGecko · 19/02/2025 23:54

Urgh. Are you sure? K names are not generally well thought of.

Enough4me · 19/02/2025 23:54

I've never heard of the name and would wonder if it had silent letters, maybe pronounced like Kuh-lan.

FrogPonds · 19/02/2025 23:55

Your issue is that it’s an anglicisation of the ‘aoi’ vowel cluster which is pronounced very differently in different dialects of Irish. CEE’-lun and CAY-lun are both correct, just as the name Caoilfhionn can be pronounced several ways.

GretchenWienersHair · 19/02/2025 23:56

Kaylan is nice. Or Caelan. I’ve never seen it spelt Kaelan so it just looks odd to me.

IHate · 19/02/2025 23:58

I never say this, but please don’t. ‘Kay’ anything is an instant class marker, and bit in a good way. Unless you’re aiming to raise a Love Island contestant or similar, just don’t.

It’s also just a really ugly name. Sorry.

Its not a class marker .
There are loads of lovely K names.
How snobbish

Aaand here we go with the classic Mn anti-Irishness, yet again.

wandawaves · 20/02/2025 00:02

I've never heard it pronounced any other way, I can't imagine what's so confusing.
Anyway I've only ever known it spelt Caelan, which i prefer to your spellings OP.

IHate · 20/02/2025 00:08

The letter K does not exist in the Irish alphabet. So neither of those names is Irish. As you’d know if you were actually Irish or knew anything about Irish names.

I don’t feel I’ve been unclear?

Needmorelego · 20/02/2025 00:08

Personally I'd spell it Kaylan.
If you go for Kaelan he will probably have several times that the a and the e get put the wrong way around (Kealan).
I know a Phoebe and a Phoenix that frequently have their names spelt Pheobe and Pheonix by accident.

What are these lovely names that begin with ‘Kay’ (not the letter K, as that’s not what I said). Please name some.

I used to know a Kayden.
Not a name I personally would choose but there's nothing wrong with it.
Kaylie or Kayleigh for girls is a perfectly ok name too.

This was to @FrogPonds

Moveoverdarlin · 20/02/2025 00:11

I wouldn’t have a clue how to pronounce it - I’d go with Key-Lan.
