How would you pronounce this name Kaelan or Kaylan

We have finally found the name we are wanting to call our son.

I love the spelling “Kaelan” pronounced “Kay- Lan” but I am worried people would call him “KEE-LAN”

or do we have to make it obvious for people and spell it out as “Kaylan”

The letter K does not exist in the Irish alphabet. So neither of those names is Irish. As you’d know if you were actually Irish or knew anything about Irish names.

I’m a native speaker. They’re an anglicisation of Caoilfhionn and variants. Do keep up.

I used to know a Kayden.
Not a name I personally would choose but there's nothing wrong with it.
Kaylie or Kayleigh for girls is a perfectly ok name too.

Edited

That’s very much one of the names I was referring to.

Soooo…not an Irish name, then? Possibly related to one, maybe (but also possibly related to Greek or Welsh names). A recently created name with various alleged ‘roots’.

Classic MN anti-Irishness, my arse.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 00:17

Kimberley
Katie
Kate
Katherine
Keda
Kyria
Kirsty
Keziah

Some K people I know, what's wrong with their above names.

AmateurNoun · 20/02/2025 00:20

I have never seen it spelled that way with the "ae" but guessed for to pronounce it.

I have come across the name Caoilfhionn at work and everyone was completely perplexed by how to pronounce it until I googled it. Your versions are a lot simpler for native English speakers IMO.

All names are ‘just a name’, though. If lots of us didn’t think they were rather important, ‘Baby Names’ wouldn’t exist as a section.

I think it’s awful. I’ve said why.

No you haven't said why it's awful at all.
Just that you don't like it.

ForFunGoose · 20/02/2025 00:21

They look like phonic versions of Caelan.
I think how and name looks written is important and those look made up. Sorry

IHate · 20/02/2025 00:22

None of those begin with ‘Kay’, which is what I said. Not the letter ‘K’, but ‘Kay’.

I’ve said why I think it’s awful, as stated. Which is the same as why I don’t like it. I’ll copy/paste.

‘Kay’ anything is an instant class marker, and not in a good way. Unless you’re aiming to raise a Love Island contestant or similar, just don’t.

MNs is odd, I come across names I don't know all the time at work & dcs friends. I live in London though & don't need someone to change their name so I can pronounce it.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 00:25

I do prefer Caelan though

trainermush · 20/02/2025 00:25

@IHate I also know a Kaye

Needmorelego · 20/02/2025 00:26

@IHate well the Kayden I used to know was a polite, well behaved, sweet little boy. His parents were ordinary folks with ordinary jobs living a quiet Christian life.
Not sure what "class" that comes under.

I’m not Irish, I just appreciate a lovely and unique name for a boy

Caelan is an Irish boys name pronounced kay-lahn.
Not very common in Ireland but there is a rugby player named Caelan Doris.

The love island contestant and that?

OP posts:
LadyGAgain · 20/02/2025 00:30

Kaelan is pronounced Kay-lun
But a nicer spelling than the others IMO.

I think they are saying that it sounds like the name of a slightly dim Love Island contestant rather than a doctor/barristers/professor etc.

I don't agree. I think it's fine as a name.

Loveshoney · 20/02/2025 00:34

Sorry, but just makes me think of Kaolin and Morphine for treating the runs. 😬

The Irish comment was in response to another poster.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s lovely. But, I’ve said my piece!

mathanxiety · 20/02/2025 00:35

Kaelan couldn't possibly be pronounced Keelan. It's obviously Kay-lan.

Don't pander to people who don't understand phonics.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2025 00:38

Caoilfhionn should be pronounced Kee-lan.

AOI is a long E sound in Irish (Taoiseach, Aoife, de hAoine, ag caoineadh, etc).

Yes to this.

He's the captain iirc?
