Mabel - like it
Willa - not a fan
Edith (Edie) - just a personal preference, not a fan of the 'th' sound, Edith, Meredith, Seth etc.
Florence - very popular and not my favourite sound.
Etta - like it
Clementine - I don't like the Clem bit. Prefer Genevieve for a similar vibe?
Phoebe - love Phoebe, was on my shortlist.

I'd go Phoebe, Mabel second.

MistyF · 16/02/2025 09:49

Mabel - love it
Willa - it's ok, but I'm not a fan
Edith (Edie) - I like the full name, not fan of nickname, but overall, it's ok name
Florence - I really like this. Also love Flora. Love flowery meaning and sound
Etta - not a fan, just too nickname-y
Clementine - it's fine, but I never liked this
Phoebe - I love this

Mabel- love it
Willa - not a fan
Edith (Edie) - really like
Florence - its ok, loads at the nursery i work at though.
Etta - prefer a longer name with this as a nn so they can decide when older (such as henrietta)
Clementine- really like
Phoebe- really like

Mumofgirls2017 · 16/02/2025 11:34

oooh lovely list. Clementine is probably my favourite although love Florence, Edith, Mabel, Willa, Etta…. So pretty much all!

Jemimapuddleduk · 16/02/2025 11:40

Mabel - not keen
Willa - love
Edith (Edie)- too many around
Florence- as above
Etta - love
Clementine - not keen
Phoebe- love

WitcheryDivine · 16/02/2025 11:43

Mabel - not for me
Willa - no and too close to Willy for me/ too easy to pun
Edith (Edie) - lovely
Florence - nice
Etta - again with the Puns (eg don’t call her Etta Clementine)
Clementine - it’s pretty but not lovely and the Clem it’s a bit phlegmy in some accents
Phoebe - lovely

Not a fan of retro names in general but if I had to choose one out of Mabel/Edith/Florence, then I’d pick Florence as it’s quite elegant sounding and has other references (the city) rather than just Great-Grandma cool.

Clementine would be nicer if it didnt have the horrible sounding nn’s Clem/Clemmy (Flem/Clammy). Constance instead? Mix of Clementine and Florence.

Not that keen on Etta as I find it a bit too nickname like - but weirdly I don’t find the same of similar Willa, maybe as it reminds me of classic author Willa Cather.

Nothing wrong as such with Phoebe- I just have an irrational dislike of the double “ee” sound as it feels whiny to me. If you want to go down the popular Greek name route then I think Zoe is nicer, although I like Xanthe even more.

So for me of your choices it’s pretty Willa or elegant Florence - although Etta would be fine as a nickname for something like the lovely Juliet or classic Harriet.

Snowmanscarf · 16/02/2025 12:27

Mabel - like
Willa - no
Edith (Edie) - like
Florence - ok
Etta - no
Clementine - like
Phoebe - ok

Travelodge · 16/02/2025 12:31

Don’t like Willa (might get teased at school and called Willy)

Not keen on Etta, sounds hard

Clementine makes me think of satsuma

Love the rest!

Mischance · 16/02/2025 12:34

It is fascinating how names go in cycles. I had a gaggle of maiden aunts with names just like this and I can't help thinking of them when I see these.

I like Florence.

BoleynMemories13 · 16/02/2025 12:42

Phoebe and Florence are my favourites. Edith and Mabel aren't really my style, but are ok. I'm really not keen on the rest.

LoudPlumDog · 16/02/2025 12:45

Willa or Phoebe!

Bloom15 · 16/02/2025 12:46

I love Phoebe and Etta

Normallynumb · 16/02/2025 12:56

I love Edith( Edie) and Phoebe
Clementine is nice, but I don't like Clemmie
Friend has just called his baby Camille, that is lovely.

BeautyBlanche · 16/02/2025 12:56

Phoebe, Florence or Clementine are lovely

user1492757084 · 16/02/2025 12:57

Inspired from your list, I like..

Etta
Edie
Laura
Mietta
Phoebe - my fave
Henrietta
Clemency

Nicolathecat · 16/02/2025 13:12

I really like all your names, lovely, cute vintage names and all would be great.
I have heard of babies called Florence, Phoebe, Edith, Etta and Mabel but not met any babies or toddlers called Clementine or Willia in my area SW.
For that reason I would go for those two!

Nicolathecat · 16/02/2025 13:13

Sorry *Willa not Willia!

applemelons · 16/02/2025 13:47

Mabel - I know a horse and a spaniel with this name so to me it’s a pet’s name.
Willa - it’s alright, it reminds me of the character in succession, bit nothing-y
Edith (Edie) - not bad!
Florence- nice!
Etta - nope
Clementine - nope
Phoebe - it’s okay

shoopshoopdedoo · 16/02/2025 14:26

Mabel - really like, though it’s quite trendy
Willa - not keen
Edith (Edie) - like
Florence - like, love Florrie or Flossie too
Etta - not keen, unless as a nickname
Clementine - dislike, feels “too much” to me
Phoebe - love

My order would be

  1. Phoebe - lovely classic
  2. Mabel - love the vintage chic feel
  3. Florence - another vintage chic one - quite popular
  4. Edith - full name is just ok but I love the nn Edie
  5. Etta - like it but feels unfinished - prefer as a nn for something (Juliet / Harriet / Henrietta)
  6. Clementine - I used to dislike this but it’s growing on me and Clem / Clemmy nn’s are growing on me too
  7. Willa - this gets misheard as Willy in the accent where I live! Love Willow.
user2848502016 · 16/02/2025 15:33

Mabel - my favourite from this list
Willa - don't like it, Willow is better
Edith (Edie) - love it
Florence - it's ok but not my favourite
Etta - it's nice but might be dated in a few years, and more of a nickname than a full name. My friend's DD is Henrietta shortened to Etta which is nicer
Clementine - cute, but quite a mouthful and no nice options for shortening it, Clemmie is horrible, Tina or Mimi not great. You could go Emmie I guess
Phoebe - nice

timoteigirl · 16/02/2025 15:43

I like Phoebe best and Etta least.
