Love the name Amelie, but keen to understand if there would be any different pronunciations to how I would say it?

Would you say it;

Amma-Lee

Or

A-meee-leee

PercyFone · 10/02/2025 22:06

Amma Lee. I've never heard anything else... and I know about a dozen under ten.

Glulam · 10/02/2025 22:11

I would have pronounced it more ammeh-lee, with a short e for the first e. Very pretty.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/02/2025 22:20

Amma-lee. Lovely name, the only thing to consider is that the one I know gets misheard as Emily.

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/02/2025 22:28

It's lovely, I know a few at different ages but none under the age of about 10

bluebunnys · 10/02/2025 22:53

Unless you spell it Amalie, of course

MichelleCancelled · 10/02/2025 22:55

Amayleea is how I would pronounce it. I think it's the Danish way.

Nanny1983 · 10/02/2025 22:55

I like it , more than I like Amelia .

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/02/2025 23:12

Surely it’s pronounced “Amma-Lee” like the well known film? Amelie apparently had a surge in popularity after it came out in 2001 and still hasn’t quite dropped out of the E and W Top 100 yet- which should hopefully avoid most mispronunciation or confusion with Emily. I’ve only met a few in RL though. Pretty name.

That’s not how the name of the woman in the film is pronounced. She is Amélie, pronounced ah-may-lee.

Most British ones don’t use the acute accent and are Amma- lee, we have one in our family. Amelie rhymes with family, come to think of it!

Oh, interesting- it’s been over 20 years since I’ve seen it, so I’m obviously misremembering/getting the pronunciation confused with the British Amelie’s I’ve met in RL 🤷‍♀️

I suppose Brits do have their own pronunciation of other French names as well- but I was assuming since the film was very popular at the time and sparked the names rise here, that people would have copied the pronunciation too.

Amma-Lee.
I love the name and have never known anyone called it.

I think it's the name of Madeleine McCann's sister, that would put me off using it to be honest as I would be thinking of the McCann's everytime I said it.

BinsDrama · 11/02/2025 01:08

It's Amay-Lee. It's soppy and annoying in French. (sorry)

pincklop · 11/02/2025 01:51

Nanny1983 · 10/02/2025 22:55

English is boring now. Emilie Emilia Amelie are very lovely names better than Amelia that's very old and boring now
