Asking for a Friend(Not me unfortunately)

Opinions please? Do they go together?

Seren and Athena is another possibility but she’s leaning towards Primrose and Athena.

TIA

Before reading any other comments I had a strong reaction that please please let me be the Athena in this situation.

RandomUsernameHere · 10/02/2025 17:06

To me Athena sounds strong but Primrose sounds very weak. I don't think twins' names should "match" but that is too much of a difference in my opinion.

Mimilamore · 10/02/2025 17:11

Beautiful names and if she likes them it is nobody elses business anyway!

reesiespieces · 10/02/2025 17:11

I agree with other posters, it needs to be a stronger name to go with Athena

Radiatorvalves · 10/02/2025 17:12

Much like others I like Athena, but not Primrose (prim and proper). Seren is ok.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 10/02/2025 17:22

Agree with the majority of posters saying that Primrose is slightly insipid whereas Athena is strong, a goddess, daughter of Zeus.

Primrose definitely! Why does anyone care about what names mean? Who looks them up other than somewhat obsessive people! It’s just two lovely names. I actually admire that they are not connected. A breath of fresh air!

Er, what do you mean about obsessively looking up the meanings of the names? A moderately well educated person will know without looking up anything that a primrose is a sweet but rather twee little yellow flower and that Athena is the goddess of wisdom and will respond accordingly: the connotations of the names are not exactly obscure! Language matters. For example, just consider why little girls are highly unlikely to be named Myra in the UK since the early 60's, however "lovely" the name might seem to some!

I much prefer Serena to Seren, but you couldn’t have Serena and Athena. I dislike Athena anyway, and prefer Alana, Alicia or Alexandra.

GOODforyourhealth · 10/02/2025 17:28

Hate Primrose

Love Athena!

billycat321 · 10/02/2025 17:59

NO to Ophelia- if your surname is Balls!

TizerorFizz · 10/02/2025 18:00

@AmiablePedant I might know the origin of the names but it’s of no consequence. Why it’s seen as mattering is beyond me. Since when is a flower twee? Bizarre. It’s a flower. Also hate to disappoint you, but Myra is now used! What happened 60 years ago doesn’t feel relevant now. Fred and Rose West were killers. Loads of Freds and Roses around.

Primrose would be the shy and whiny one, clingy and crying in the corner.

Athena would very much be the cool kid and the leader of the pack.

Yeah this.
Primrose is not a good name. The word ‘prim’ does not have good connotations.

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 10/02/2025 18:03

Primrose and Athena are both awful names for different reasons. Is there anything else on the shortlist apart from Seren? I would pick another name that goes better with that.

HugoYorway · 10/02/2025 18:29

Seren and Athena have completely different vibes. I'm not keen on Seren anyway, but Stella or Estella would go nicely with Athena.

TizerorFizz · 10/02/2025 18:48

It’s unbelievable that people put personality types on names! Just ludicrous. I have known 2 Primroses. Both great women. It’s very bizarre to think a name affects personality.

LovelySunnyDayToday · 10/02/2025 19:17

I would go with one if these over Primrose....

Athena & Xanthe
Athena & Nefeli
Athena & Ophelia

AddictedToBooks · 10/02/2025 19:19

A gorgeous combination and both names are beautiful in their own right

I know a super cool, strong woman called Primrose.

Dillydollydingdong · 10/02/2025 19:20

There will be a lot of baby girls being called Athena now that princess Beatrice has named her baby Athena. Imagine in a few years time every infants class will have at least five Athena's!

Onlyvisiting · 10/02/2025 19:23

Seren is far better. Primrose is a name for a fairy in a story or a pet. Not an adult woman.

NormasArse · 10/02/2025 19:25

I know a very mousy Athena, and a lively, personality filled Primrose.

Both nice people.

KayEmAy · 10/02/2025 19:27

I think they are very well matched, same level of unique but known.

Though I just love Seren

ElizaMulvil · 10/02/2025 19:29

Primrose is awful. Serena better than Seren.

HugoYorway · 10/02/2025 19:31

Serena and Athena are too rhymey. Seren is too modern and a bit naff.

BettyBardMacDonald · 10/02/2025 19:35

Athena is elegant and beautiful. Primrose is silly; I'm envisioning a miniature Hyacinth Bucket.

Athena and Cassandra or something like that would be better
