Asking for a Friend(Not me unfortunately)

Opinions please? Do they go together?

Seren and Athena is another possibility but she’s leaning towards Primrose and Athena.

TIA

Athena is great - who doesn’t want to be named after a goddess

But I’d be pissed if I were Primrose - they are sweet but unexciting little flowers - but mainly because who wants the word prim in their name. It’s just a bit wet all round. Especially when you’ve got a sister named after the goddess of war and wisdom and whatnot

Rose would be better - at least a Rose has some thorns 😁

Seren is also better - though I think Stella or Estella (which also mean star) go better with Athena though, or maybe Celeste..

Primrose definitely! Why does anyone care about what names mean? Who looks them up other than somewhat obsessive people! It’s just two lovely names. I actually admire that they are not connected. A breath of fresh air!

If you mean you had to google what a Primrose is or who Athena is, then I think you are quite unusual, I mean, I hope you are..

shoopshoopdedoo · 10/02/2025 20:38

I’d hate to be called Primrose, and I’m not that keen on Seren - it always seems a bit unfinished to me.

How about (off the top of my head):
Athena and Xanthe
Athena and Iola
Athena and Artemis
Athena and Penelope
Athena and Eleni

TheFlyingHorse · 10/02/2025 20:44

Primrose is awful.

Rosa would be a better match with Athena and is a much nicer name IMO.

user1492757084 · 11/02/2025 08:13

Both Primrose and Athena are fine for twins though, I have to say, I would hate to be a woman called Primrose.
I know an Athena who has a nick name Athipoo. Very cute.

Other ideas ..
Athena and Zoe
Athena and Sara
Athena and Rose
Adele and Marina
Athena and Marin
Athena and Olympia
Athena and Rosemary
Athena and Camilla Rose

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/02/2025 08:19

Athena and Elara
Athena and Dorothy
Athena and Charis
Athena and Cassia
Athena and Cleo
Athena and Xanthe
Athena and Indigo
Athena and Calista

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 11/02/2025 08:21

Also feel like Primrose is getting a raw deal in comparison to Athena. Twin names don't need to be matchy but I feel like some cohesion in vibe is helpful. Haven't RTFT so no idea if these have already been mentioned:

Athena and Artemis (maybe too matchy)
Athena and Xanthe
Athena and Juno
Athena and Astrid
Athena and Pandora
Athena and Cleo
Athena and Saskia

@AmiablePedant I might know the origin of the names but it’s of no consequence. Why it’s seen as mattering is beyond me. Since when is a flower twee? Bizarre. It’s a flower. Also hate to disappoint you, but Myra is now used! What happened 60 years ago doesn’t feel relevant now. Fred and Rose West were killers. Loads of Freds and Roses around.

Fred and Rose are common names which dilutes the association making them useable names. Myra is much less common so the association sticks. Plenty of Ians for the same reason.

Of course name meanings are significant. All cultures have naming traditions rather than just assigning a number or random sound. Some parents choose to go for what's unobtrusive and popular or 'classic' and appropriate for their social class. That's a choice based on the signifiers of that name. They don't want their child to stand out, or at least for that reason.

Of course it makes sense that there is a feeling of disparity between a major Goddess's name and a flower, that while in itself has a lot going for it, it's a tough survivor despite its delicacy, it signifies the changing of the seasons, etc, contains the word 'prim' which sounds purse lipped and judgemental. Nominative determinism may be a fallacy but it doesn't feel like a fair start. Words aren't just sounds, therefore names aren't.

TizerorFizz · 11/02/2025 09:10

But who in a normal world cares about the background of the names? It’s just odd if a parent likes the names. That’s my point. It’s an obsession for no reason. People accept dc have names. Neither are stupid or laughable. I just don’t go around looking into meanings of dc names. In life there are more important things to think about. People can use what names they like and the rest of us are onlookers not judges.

Noperope · 11/02/2025 09:14

Love the names but not sure Primrose works with Athena.

Athena and Penelope
Athena and Petra
Athena and Sophia

NorthernGirl1981 · 11/02/2025 09:16

I feel sorry for Primrose. She’ll always be wondering why she was the unlucky one whilst her sister got a beautiful, modern and strong name.

Your friend should absolutely go with Seren.

Makeacircle · 11/02/2025 09:17

I think if I were Primrose I'd feel a little hard done by

A lot of people are interested in the background of names and the meanings. Language is very important. Primrose and Athena aren't terrible names themselves but it's an incongruous pairing and the point people are making is that Primrose herself may feel she has the weaker deal.

Twixtmasjigsaw · 11/02/2025 13:31

I think Seren and Athena work better as a pair and are both equally lovely. Not keen on Primrose - I think it's the 'prim', sounds stuffy to me.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 11/02/2025 14:03

Athena is OK. I don’t think anyone wants to be called Primrose, though.

How about Rosalie or Rosalia, if she wants a rose name?

GlassesTime · 11/02/2025 19:21

Thanks all for the responses and suggestions.

Aurelia and Ophelia have been added as a possible alternative. She likes Ariadne too but that may be a bit much together.

Any opinions on Aurelia and Athena? Athena and Ophelia or Athena and Ariadne?

After this I’m leaving it to my Friend but it’s been very helpful to canvas opinions.

TIA

Don’t have both names starting with A. They will get cards and letters to A surname. Who is it addressed to? So any combination but not A&A.

HugoYorway · 11/02/2025 19:31

Two As too twinny. Both names having a 'ee' stressed syllable a bit too much.

Athena and Ophelia are lovely names.

Other ideas
Athena and Regina
Athena and Vendela
Athena and Dorothea

(I like the first names you mentioned too, though, Primrose and Athena).

Good luck to your friend!

Snowmanscarf · 11/02/2025 21:44

I do like the nane Primrose, but I think Seren goes better with Athena .

If you wanted Primrose, I’d go for another nature nane, but doesn’t have to be a flower.

Wren
Willow
Robyn
Brooke
