Alternative to Isla?

AmyW9 · 09/02/2025 13:23

35 weeks pregnant and DH and I cannot settle on a name!

I LOVE the name Isla, but he's not convinced. Doesn't hate it, doesn't love it. Doing my best to keep an open mind despite the fact I've been calling the baby Isla in my head for months now.... 😬

Would love any alternative suggestions which are similar!

Isla is pretty popular, so based on that I’d be looking for an alternative.
Iona immediately came to mind.
Other suggestions:
Sara
Lara
Lyra

My friend who loved the name Isla but couldn't use it ended up naming her daughter Violet

What are his suggestion? If he doesn't have any good suggestion, then he doesn't have anything against baby being named Isla. Yes, he either should give you valid suggestion, or accept the fact he might not love his daughter name, but that obviously doesn't mean he doesn't love his daughter.
That said, does he have some suggestions, but you don't take him seriously or has really bad suggestions? Share them so we can see could they be potential middles
I think Iona and Ayla are most similar to Isla.

Freya.

When I hear Isla I just always think her sister should be Freya (and vice versa!)

Freya is just so complimentary and similar but different to Isla. A good alternative in my view.

Isn’t Ayla pronounced the same as Isla? The one I knew was!

Iona and Orla always seem similar to Isla in my head.

I see someone has already suggested it, but Ailsa is a lovely name. Knew a really nice girl at school but this name.

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 09/02/2025 16:25

Isla is very popular and has for years- simply because it is a lovely name! It was on my list as well.

Emilia?

I know an Elowyn who is called Ella. Also i went to school with an Ellersleigh who was known as Ellie. They have similar feels I think.

As I say, the only ayla I’ve met was pronounced the same as Isla (eye-lah). She spent her life correcting people who said it with the first syllable rhyming with ‘May’. Perhaps she was pronouncing it in an usual way though!

That definitely sounds odd, it's not the same sound at all.

SnoopySantaPaws · 09/02/2025 17:53

Why don't you just use ISLA?

He doesn't dislike it. He just doesn't love it but he doesn't have another name. He does love and you do love it so it just makes sense to use it unless he can come up with something. He really loves that you love. It's not your job to do your head in to find a name he loves when you already have a name you love and would be happy to use. The onus is on him to find one he prefers and that you like.

Goscat · 09/02/2025 19:47

I used to love Isla, but there are 3 Islas in my sons nursery class, our neighbour has a baby Isla and 2 of my friends! It's so common now even in England and the US!! It was the top name in Scotland last year.

Ailsa
Vaila
Elia
