To think it doesn’t matter that the name is similar to a famous architect

I’m losing my mind!!

DH and I are expecting our first baby. We need a name that works in Arabic and English.

Our surname is Hadid, we love the name Zara. However DH thinks it is odd that her name would be one letter away from the architect Zaha Hadid.

I think Zara Hadid is a lovely name and that the architect is irrelevant.

thoughts?

I've never heard of zaha hadid so I'd guess most other people haven't either?

Zara is a beautiful name

Zara Hadid sounds great.

The architect connection is positive, and not the exact same name.

caramac04 · 06/02/2025 12:54

Zara is beautiful and works with your surname. It’s not close enough to the architect’s name to be an issue imo.

StampOnTheGround · 06/02/2025 12:55

I haven't heard of Zaha Hadid either, Zara is lovely and goes well with your surname.

Enko · 06/02/2025 12:55

I've heard of Zaha Hadid but it didn't cross my mind with Zara Hadid.

If you wanted to name a boy Frank Lloyd Wright I think it would be different but Zara is fine IMO.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 06/02/2025 12:56

An architect is hardly an offensive person to have a similar name to!!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 06/02/2025 12:57

I have heard of Zaha Hadid but I don't think it matters. It's a positive association and also Zara is quite a mainstream name in the UK so the association will likely be overshadowed by "other Zaras I know" for most.

It's a nice name.

HugoYorway · 06/02/2025 12:58

I'd read it as Zaha Hadid, but I know some real life people who have the names of famous people and other than the odd comment like 'was it deliberate?',it wasn't an issue.

AAligator · 06/02/2025 12:58

Starting to think DH might be over estimating the average persons knowledge of architecture.

I really love Zara as a name and think Zara Hadid sounds lovely, he loves the name too just worried everyone will think of the architect when they hear the name.

Zaha Hadid is dead. A genius, but not as front of mind as say Norman Forster or Frank Lloyd Wright.

Tepidbath · 06/02/2025 13:00

I think it’s lovely and have never heard of Zaha Hadid

DemonicCaveMaggot · 06/02/2025 13:01

It may sound a bit similar but Zara is not Zaha. It is beautiful name and I don't think many people will think of the architect.

Kissedbyfire1 · 06/02/2025 13:01

He’s definitely over-estimating people’s knowledge of important architects.
I have the same first name as a very high profile dead victim of a political scandal that happened years after I was born and people still ask if I was named after her. Don’t overthink it.

aster10 · 06/02/2025 13:01

People might be more likely to suspect a connection with certain top models haha (I think there are two models with the surname Hadid and they are sisters and I vaguely remember they have a remote connection with the architect too)

Not entirely impossible, DHs family are from the same area as the Hadid sisters father. No known relation though … sadly 🤣

I've heard of Sir Christopher Wren and Albert Speer.

That's about it, for architects.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/02/2025 13:05

It's a beautiful name and I really think your Dh is overestimating how many people know famous architects.

Even if they do think of it, it's not a bad thing anyway.

PercyFone · 06/02/2025 13:05

I love love love Zara (biased...) but I'm afraid I would associate the name with the architect. It probably won't matter to your DD, but I suspect you would get people asking about it (which may not worry you)

Any of the below work?

Farrah
Leila
Jasmine/ Yasmine
Noor
Zadie
Saffron
Dinah
Minah
Raya

Ha ha I was coming on to see if it was this 😂😂

I think we’ve discussed every option and ultimately we do like some others but Zara is our favourite by far!

I thought you were going to come up with Charles Rennie Mackintosh 😀

you’ll be fine. Personally I doubt a female architect will be that well known to the general public- I am only aware of her because I am a swim coach.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/02/2025 13:09

It's beautiful name - I think few will associate it at all

Ineedanewsofa · 06/02/2025 13:10

It’s a lovely name @AAligator - I had heard of the architect but agree the association is positive.
FWIW my DC goes to school with a ‘Jack Daniels’…

StormingNorman · 06/02/2025 13:13

I would think of the architect but their work is breathtaking so it wouldn’t bother me.

Zara and Zaha are also quite a different sound.

It’s a beautiful name so do t let the association stop you x

CerealPosterHere · 06/02/2025 13:13

I know the architect but only because of architects in the family talking about her and knowing who Bella and Gigi are. Most people won’t know. Name is lovely.
