To think it doesn’t matter that the name is similar to a famous architect

I’m losing my mind!!

DH and I are expecting our first baby. We need a name that works in Arabic and English.

Our surname is Hadid, we love the name Zara. However DH thinks it is odd that her name would be one letter away from the architect Zaha Hadid.

I think Zara Hadid is a lovely name and that the architect is irrelevant.

thoughts?

I know the architect but only because of architects in the family talking about her and knowing who Bella and Gigi are. Most people won’t know. Name is lovely.

I just double checked as in my mind they were related, like nieces. And they’re not 😂

Spirallingdownwards · 06/02/2025 13:15

Another one here who hadn't heard of Zaha Hadid so vote for Zara (but avoid Bella and Gigi).

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/02/2025 13:16

I really don't think it's an issue.

snowflakelake · 06/02/2025 13:16

I'm aware of the architect but it wouldn't put me off using your name.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/02/2025 13:20

its a lovely name (congratulations by the way) and the Architect in question was a magnificent woman so the connection is only positive for me. I don’t think that many Brits will know or remember her tbh.

LandofSpices · 06/02/2025 13:20

It's a lovely name, but it did immediately make me think of the architect, and I suspect it will for a lot of people, depending on your circles. Obviously, this may not be a problem for you. It would for me. I discarded a name I really liked for DS because of a resemblance to a film director's name.

LandofSpices · 06/02/2025 13:27

I mean, I really liked that director's work, and I like many of Zada Hadid's designs, so the connotations of both are really positive, but I tried, when finding a name for DS, to find a name that had as few connotations as possible.

DragonFly98 · 06/02/2025 13:28

Never heard of Zaha Hadid , but love your name choice.

MumonabikeE5 · 06/02/2025 13:30

I’ve heard of Zaha Hadid.
and yes your chosen name is close and would remind me of her. But it also sounds pretty common place so I don’t think it would be wrong for you to choose it, unless you actively dislike Zaha Hadids architecture and wouldn’t want even a passing association with her.
You’ve chosen a good solid name.
enjoy her!

AnotherDunromin · 06/02/2025 13:33

I was at an event a few years ago with a lot of architects in attendance, and Zaha Hadid turned up - the reaction was unanimously positive, lots of fan-girling! She is very well regarded by most architects IME.

HugoYorway · 06/02/2025 12:58

I'd read it as Zaha Hadid, but I know some real life people who have the names of famous people and other than the odd comment like 'was it deliberate?',it wasn't an issue.

I know people with the same names as a well-known actor, a C-list entertainer and a concert pianist. It happens.

And those are exactly the same names with the same spellings.

As others have said, Zara isn't Zaha.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 06/02/2025 13:41

If you were calling her Zaha it might invite questions about whether you named her after her namesake but Zara wasn’t the name of the architect.

Zara is beautiful and timeless.

Bowling4soup · 06/02/2025 12:53

I've never heard of zaha hadid so I'd guess most other people haven't either?

Zara is a beautiful name

A lot of people have heard of Zaha Hadid,

she is a super role model.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/02/2025 13:44

It’s a beautiful name op.

I’ve heard of the architect but she’s not well known enough for it to be an issue. She’s dead and has a good reputation so it’s not likely she’s going to become famous in future for negative reasons.

Uricon2 · 06/02/2025 13:45

It's a really beautiful name OP.

maudelovesharold · 06/02/2025 13:55

I've never heard of zaha hadid

If Zaha Hadid’s parent had been posting on ‘Baby names’, I would probably have advised against the juxtaposition of Zaha and Hadid. Zara Hadid, on the other hand, flows beautifully!

Wilfrida1 · 06/02/2025 13:58

It’s lovely …. and not as though it’s Christopher Wren!

SheridansPortSalut · 06/02/2025 13:59

My guess is that most people couldn't name any famous architects.

Mielikki · 06/02/2025 14:00

Zaha Hadid is hardly Albert Speer. You'll be fine.

Spidey66 · 06/02/2025 14:03

If it's who I'm thinking of, the only time I've heard of Zaha Hadid was when Meg mentioned her on Motherland, and I had to Google her to find out who she was. But it seems any association will be positive. Zara goes well with your surname, it's a lovely name.

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 06/02/2025 14:17

It is the first thing I thought of!

However by the time the baby is older the architect will be less known as part of an entirely different generation.

It's not a bad reference to have if you really love the name ☺️

HugoYorway · 06/02/2025 12:58

Same.. people will mis hear it but does it matter?

steppemum · 06/02/2025 14:20

Zara is lovely and works really well in both languages, which is unusual, most names work better in one and are 'ok' in the other.

Zara Hadid flows really well too. If I did associate with the architect it would only be a positive.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/02/2025 14:23

It's a shame more people haven't heard of her. Tell your daughters because 'see it, be it'. I loved being close up to her work in Seoul, she made truly cool, modern but not stupid buildings.

It's a great association, use it.

beAsensible1 · 06/02/2025 14:26

i mean zaha Hadid is an architectural icon so if the baby was named after her it would be.

hadid is a very common Arabic surname so there’s no point getting caught up by similarities. Mohammed is the most popular name in the world that hasn’t stopped anyone
