Some of those certainly feel 'dated' at the moment, though, so I wouldn't agree they are 'timeless' -- Paul, for instance, is a very late 70s name, also Peter and Mark. And yes, as you said Richard. I'd class Richard with Malcolm, Bernard and Kenneth!

A lot or the suggestions are not timeless. They are very much 'of a certain era' and feel dated as a result. Michael, David, Paul, Richard all feel dated rather than timeless.

True timeless names include

Henry
Quentin
Magnus
Alexander
Thomas
Conrad

I don't think you could judge someone's age in these cases.

bluebunnys · 27/01/2025 15:20

Also, many of the suggestions aren't 'not too popular'. Names like Thomas, William, Arthur are VERY common and overused imo

I wouldn't get hung up on the 'not too common' thing. We gave our children classic names, never out of the top 50 as far back as records go, and our son was one of only two with that name in a year group of over 200 boys at secondary school, no others in his year at primary school. I don't recall any other girl in my daughter's year at primary or secondary school with the same name as her.

Classic boys' names for me would mostly be either royal or biblical. These have all been used a lot for many centuries across the British Isles. What makes a name classic for me is that it's stood the test of time and it's also not associated with any particular class or background.

Joseph is lovely

I don't think you can go wrong with a royal or biblical name if looking for something timeless

toastofthetown · 27/01/2025 17:30

In England and Wales these are the only boys names which haven't dropped out of the top hundred since 1904 so statistically most timeless if you are from E&W.

  • ALEXANDER
  • DANIEL
  • DAVID
  • EDWARD
  • GEORGE
  • JAMES
  • JOSEPH
  • MICHAEL
  • THOMAS
  • WILLIAM

I don't think Paul's late 70s. I was born early 60s and there are a lot of Pauls my age and older, also quite a few my son's age (born early 90s).
