Looking for inspiration, classic boys names that aren't too popular but are timeless.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Some of those certainly feel 'dated' at the moment, though, so I wouldn't agree they are 'timeless' -- Paul, for instance, is a very late 70s name, also Peter and Mark. And yes, as you said Richard. I'd class Richard with Malcolm, Bernard and Kenneth!

My FIL was a Paul, and I know many others the same sort of age. Paul McCartney is in his 80s.
The name was very popular in the 1950s/60s/70s.

My grandfather was Richard, I have an uncle, cousin and a friend called Richard.
It has been the name of a few kings.

Kings and Saints are what you're looking for.
Others would be Laurence, Robert, Sebastian.

I agree with you. I don't understand the definition of timeless here - some of those name scream 70s to me whil others have only recently had a resurgence.

Joseph is great!

I also know a young Matthew, Adam, Daniel and John, which all sound great on little ones despite being older traditional names.

RocketNan · 28/01/2025 02:11

David / Dave. Everyone knows a Dave. What will happen when there are no Daves left? See also Steves and Marks.

This is crazy. Paul is Biblical: St Paul in the New Testament. Pretty timeless to my ear. Paul Newman, Paul McCartney; Peter, Paul and Mary. Loads of Pauls when I was a child in the 60's and you can find them all over the place across the 19th and 20th centuries.

I did say I wasn't sure what the op meant by timeless. Yes if they mean 'as old as time' but not if they mean they don't want it to date. I've known a few baby Peters in the last 5 years but I don't know any Pauls under the age of about 45.

And if you were a child born in 2023 in England and Wales you wouldn’t find lots of Pauls your age. Out of 300,000+ baby boys born, there were 86 Pauls. Same number as Alan and Jaden. More boys were called Presley, Junior or Lucian than Paul in 2023. If I met an adult man and a little boy and I knew one was Paul and one was Ezra, I’d assume that Paul was the adult and Ezra the baby - and be very surprised if the baby turned out to be a Paul. That’s the opposite of timeless to me. I consider a name’s timelessness to be a function of its modern usage, not how long the name has been used as a name; can I make assumptions about the name owners age and generation by their name. I can with Paul - and so it doesn’t feel timeless to me.

It's not timeless at all imo. It was super fashionable in the 1960s, along with David, Andy, Steve and Mike!!

These names are currently unfashionable and rarely used. They sound dated!

bluebunnys · 28/01/2025 12:26

Agreed. Timeless names, like timeless fashion, is NEVER super fashionable and therefore never falls out of fashion to sound dated.

Absolutely. But now Paul is very dated, like Malcolm, Bernard, Roger and Keith, and isn't due a revival just yet.

BootballJoy · 28/01/2025 15:37

Thomas
Adam
Robin
Oliver
Julian
William
Henry
Edmund
Edward
Alexander
Ralph
Alistair
Charles
Aidan
James
Benjamin
Matthew
Christopher

I know a few across generations with those names, would find it harder than others to gauge their age.

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if I heard of a baby Paul, Malcolm, Roger or Bernard.
Keith is bad though.

Ten, 20 years ago, would we have forseen the popularity of Arthur, Arlo, Luca and Jude?

That's the problem - some names soar up the charts and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Such fashionable names eventually fall out of fashion and sound dated.

True timeless names are those that never become super fashionable.

SquigglePigs · 28/01/2025 17:23

Names I know of adults and kids and don't feel out of place with either:

William
Matthew
Alexander
Christopher
Samuel/Sam
Benjamin/Ben
Daniel
James
Joshua/Josh
Luke
George
Harry
Oliver
Nicholas

I do know a 6 year old Peter. It felt odd at first but not any more.

Others that I've not heard recently on kids but might fit the bill:

David
Andrew
Jonathan
Adam
Phillip
Gareth
Nathaniel

I'd disagree. Names like James, Thomas, Charles, Elizabeth, Margaret and Charlotte have had moments of being very popular, but they don't fall out of use.

Diminutives like Jimmy, Jamie, Betty, Elsie, Lisa, Beth, Margot, Charlie become dated
