Margot - is it too popular? Any alternatives?

We like the name Margot and the nickname Maggie, but are conscious that it has really risen in popularity in recent years. Would welcome thoughts on whether you think it is too popular and risks becoming overdone?

And would be keen to hear any suggestions of classic pretty names that are similar but maybe slightly less popular!

I think it's lovely, no Margots or Maggies in either DDs classes at school

I don’t know any Margots and have never come across one in my children’s class, but I know an 11 year old Maggie.

I've been teaching for a long time and I don't believe I've ever taught a Margot.
I like it.

Personally I wouldn't worry about having a popular name. We have 2 top 10 names and never had someone in the same class or activity with the same name.
My DD, we have a couple of variations of her nickname in a one activity but they are the opposite gender.

I find those names that are trying to be unique are becoming too popular....the amount of variations on Amelia is crazy at my DD nursery. None actually Amelia though

There are 3 Margots in my DD's drama class (3-5 year olds).

I thought Margot and Maggie were both short for Margaret, which is awful imo. Makes me think of Thatcher!

Interesting - my name was quite popular in my birth year and there were 7 (!) of us in one class so I'd rather minimise the chance of that happening to my daughter.

London here - in infant school there's probably one per year. It's a super cool name, i like it!

Would it? I'd always thought that was the original, French spelling- but I'm not French and happy to be corrected.

I love Margot, wanted to use it but DH wasn’t sure.

I think it depends where you are geographically! Margot seems v popular in London

Margeaux is slightly better.

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France, pronounced Mar-goh

I strongly dislike the Margot spelling as it s pronounced Mar-gott in Germany and other countries outside of France

Margot and Maggie are both diminutives of Margaret. Using Maggie as a nn of Margot seems a bit silly.

I have a 2yo and I know of 4 Margot/Margaux and 1 Maggie. I love the name and none of the girls know each other

Wouldn't worry about "popularity" the name noah is the second most popular name and I don't know any young Noah's.

My daughter (10y) has a friend called Margot/Maggie. I love it. Weren’t many around 10yrs ago but it’s a good name. You can’t control what their friends call them and she is a Mags. So that’s something to consider.

I was told to practice shouting the name 10 times up the stairs and as loudly as you can across the park,to see if you are really going to love it when it counts!

I actually didn’t do that - but should have done! We have ended up just daily calling her the nickname we wanted. There was no point in the long version! Causes a little confusion.

So if you love Maggie, then just call her that. No need for the Margot unless you are actually going to use it.
