Margot - is it too popular? Any alternatives?

We like the name Margot and the nickname Maggie, but are conscious that it has really risen in popularity in recent years. Would welcome thoughts on whether you think it is too popular and risks becoming overdone?

And would be keen to hear any suggestions of classic pretty names that are similar but maybe slightly less popular!

Thanks!

I'd say too popular because of Margot Robbie.

But I prefere Margot to Margaret if you want Maggie.

Margot Robbie is a great woman. I prefer the more modern Margot to Margaret but it is derived from there I suppose which is still good first British prime minister and all. I don't think it's bad to share names with famous people tbh

The French spelling is Margaux, @JC03745 . G in French is hard unless followed by a e, i or y.

Margot is a lovely name. I keep hearing that it's popular but the only one I knew was in nursery with my daughter, so she must be 27 by now. It does seem in the same vein as Audrey and Nancy per PPs.

Noonecaresifyounamechange · 26/01/2025 18:36

Marguerite would be my preference.

choose whatever name you love☺️

GoodQueenBess · 26/01/2025 18:51

Babies called Margot in England & Wales since 1996

VenusClapTrap · 27/01/2025 08:08

I love it. It was high on our list for dd, but we went with Audrey in the end. I haven’t met any young Margots.

I also love Margaret, Magnolia, Marjorie, Marguerite and Marjolaine. Beautiful names.

Many of us who were around in the 80s would be put off the name because of her, even though becoming the first female PM was obviously a great achievement.

I considered Margot for my LO but went with Felicity in the end

Bamboogie · 27/01/2025 20:41

I love it. I am in peak child-rearing years, SW London, and have only met one, who is five. It's lovely. I prefer the -aux spelling.

kiana2015 · 27/01/2025 20:41

Reminds me of maggot.

Pianooo · 27/01/2025 20:43

I know three! All under 8. But I’m in London and it’s popular here. I like it though.

boxyboxs · 27/01/2025 20:44

very popular where I am in London but I also know 3 in their 20s.

Luddite26 · 27/01/2025 21:18

I was at school with a Margot she was not very nice. But I liked the name when Princess Margaret was called it in The Crown I thought Helena Bonham Carter was a great Margot that made me like the name more than I did before!

Ilovesweetsandchoc · 27/01/2025 21:30

what about using the other French spelling: Margaux? (Same pronunciation)

Margot is a French spelling too. Hence the silent T.

How about Marguerite, nn Daisy (a bit Bertie Wooster, I know).

I don't think the name Margot is too popular. It is more popular than fifty years ago and I think it is a bit trendy so could date but it's nice.

Names associated with Maggie:
Margaret is best. Nick name Maggie, Meg, Peggie, Margo, Daisy, Margie, Marnie
Margaux is my next fave. No nick name or .. Gogo.
Margot - I don't see why one would use the nick name Maggie.
Magdalen - nick name Maggie.
Maggie
And some others would use the Meg nick name ...

It’s a beautiful name, especially spelled as Margaux like the gorgeous Margaux Hemingway but unfortunately yes it’s too popular and now I’d never use it

bluebunnys · 30/01/2025 13:25

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France.
