Joel or Jude

My final post ever about baby names. Driving myself insane trying to choose between these two names. Worried about Jude being over popular at the moment and worried about the pronunciation issues with Joel. Other than that I love them both! Please help me decide so I can put my mind at rest!

I would go with Joel. Jude is lovely but does seem to be very on trend right now, whereas Joel seems to be one of those names that is known but never overused. Both are good names though!

Phopet · 16/01/2025 16:20

I very nearly called my eldest son Joel, I love it! Jude is nice but very popular which would put me off.

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/01/2025 16:27

Joel!

Mintoo · 16/01/2025 16:29

Joel - underrated and a solid name.
Jude - is a bit popular, I think 4 celebs all used the name last year.

Go with Joel!

ChocoChocoLatte · 16/01/2025 16:31

Jude

bluebunnys · 16/01/2025 17:14

Jude is the German word for Jew - the name doesn't travel well, which may or may not bother you

How does one pronounce Joel? Jo-elle?

Liv999 · 16/01/2025 17:24

Jude for me it's gorgeous, Joel is ok but a bit bland

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/01/2025 17:29

Joel or Jo-el? Prefer Jude.

Emanwenym · 16/01/2025 17:41

@bluebunnys , somewhere between Joe-ul and Jole

SkaneTos · 16/01/2025 23:24

I voted for Jude, but they are both good names!

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 23:27

Another name idea along the same lines is Jamie. I think that’s a lovely name!

eyeballpaula56 · 16/01/2025 23:30

Both lovely names. Jude just edges it for me but it is more popular than Joel.

To me Joel is a very respectable, mature, sensible sounding name. A solicitor or something. Jude is a bit cheekier. But I like that.

chakrakkhan · 16/01/2025 23:52

I know a Joel and while he is a nice lad he's a bit of a wet lettuce. Puts me off the name quite a bit. I think Jude is lovely though.

ZaraSkyTraveler · 17/01/2025 00:04

Don’t like the name Joel. Just isn’t really strong…. Just a bit…meh

love Jude though.

RogueFemale · 17/01/2025 00:07

I don't like either name.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/01/2025 00:10

Prefer Joel. And he wouldn't have to get sick of having Hey Jude sung at him on a regular basis.

user1492757084 · 17/01/2025 04:44

My choice is Joel.
All the Judes I know are women.
I know two teenage Joels. Both pronounced Jole, rhymes with sole. mole and bowl.

Sparkle88K · 17/01/2025 05:43

I love the name Jude for a boy

bluebunnys · 17/01/2025 06:44

I also know only female Judys, Judiths and Judes.

I don't find it masculine sounding.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 17/01/2025 07:21

We have a Jude. Didn't know it was getting popular- certainly wasn't when he was little. (He's 20 this year). Always liked it, obviously 😁

You were ahead of the trend! :) Does he like his name?

I like both. Joel is the main character in a computer game / TV series (the Last of Us). It’s a great character so shouldn’t create many problems … although people keep badgering the makers to release a LOU3.

Jude is a nice name. I have only met one and had no idea it was popular. The “Hey Jude” thing would irritate me though.

Applecharm25 · 19/01/2025 14:54

I think that jude is a bit of a weird name

CruCru · 19/01/2025 15:47

Jude would work better with a surname of at least two syllables. Jude Clark sounds a bit abrupt.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/01/2025 16:14

Joel. I know several Judes - they're all female
