@mathanxiety yes I don't think it's popular - but it is an actual name.

It's an actual surname. Some people use these as first names, it's traditional in Scotland and the US but if you were to ask, some sound pleasant and some don't. My surname for instance, is IMO fantastic as a surname. Tells you a lot about heritage. It would be an absolute stinker as a first name though. Utterly ridiculous sounding.

Needmorelego · 11/01/2025 08:20

@Waterboatlass it has been used as a first name for a long time now. Not a hugely popular one - but it has been.
There was an actor called Farley Granger born 100 years ago in 1925. His full name was apparently Farley Granger Jr - meaning his Dad was also Farley.

I actually quite like it, I didn’t think of Rusks immediately, but I did immediately think it was a boys name. no matter what the spelling, it doesn’t naturally come across as a gender neutral name.

Yes, Farley Granger was American. As I say, it's an American naming convention to use surnames as first names.

Bienemaias · 11/01/2025 14:17

I'm not keen on either but would choose Farley

Chamberlain? Ironmonger? Cheeseman?

Chamberlain? Ironmonger? Cheeseman?

What are you trying to say because I'm confused those are occupations. I've never heard anyone called Mr Ironmonger or Mr Cheeseman

They are not like Walker, Cooper, Harper which are occupational names but also established names.

And who knows the history of Farley what did a Farley do?

Cheeseman is a surname. Many surnames don't make good first names. I'd not want to call my child Butcher, Butt, Slaughter...

Needanewname42 · 12/01/2025 11:48

Ok I've never heard anyone called Cheeseman. But that doesn't change the fact Farley is a name some surnames work better as first names than others.

RuthW · 12/01/2025 11:49

Another rusks thought.

Please don't

Farley is a toponym (the -ley suggests this, it means meadow or lea), not an occupational name. Yes it certainly can and has been used as a first name but a lot are commenting that they aren't keen. Cheeseman is a known surname, as is Cheesewright. Very important profession IMO. Ironmonger is a real name too, as is Sexsmith, one of my favourites. Again, maybe not first name material!

Emanwenym · 12/01/2025 12:35

@Needanewname42 , I know more people called Cheeseman than Farley. Of the two,I'd prefer to have Farley as a first name.

Is not want those as first OR as last names!!!

Farley, on the other hand, is fine and inoffensive. It sounds friendly!

Bienemaias · 12/01/2025 13:38

Sorry I'd

Emanwenym · 12/01/2025 13:48

What? I think it's fine too. It's no worse than Riley, Bradley or Finley.

Exactly i actually can't believe Butcher, Cheeseman or Ironmonger even entered the conversation.

Or Butt Shock

Farley is a lovely name and no different to Marley imo

I think people really just want to me rude tonight 🙈

People on here will say what they are really thinking about a name, whereas in real life they would be polite but just think it. Wouldn't you rather know the truth about what people will think?

For a girl though?

Emanwenym · 12/01/2025 17:21

This is MN, so those names are probably unisex.SmileI've heard of a girl called Finley and a girl called Riley. Bradley seems to not be used for girls.

Farley’s rusks.

Exactly what I thought

reichs79 · 12/01/2025 21:06

My friends dog was called Farley but known as Farty Farley, because he stunk. I didn't know it was a real name I thought they made it up.
