We have chosen this name for our little girl but can't settle on a spelling what are people's opinions please?

I think Farley sounds beautiful! It would suit both a sweet little girl and an older woman. I am pregnant with my first baby and will add this one to my shortlist 💛

Lots of negativity on this thread. There will always be people who hate what you choose, no matter if it’s super common or unusual. If you like the name, definitely go for it!

MrsBelle · 09/01/2025 23:09

This seems to have really offended people. I get it's not a top 100 but I thought it was an easily distinguishable name that's Been around for years....but I get it and have taken people opinions on board 😁

@AdaColeman why? It's a actual name. So is Ada (which I assume isn't your real name).
Would you like it if someone said Ada was a "strange name"?

BBQPete · 09/01/2025 23:13

Does seem odd to name a child after a rusk.

Changing the spelling slightly doesn't help.

Think again, OP, for the sake of your dd.

Needmorelego · 09/01/2025 23:13

@MrsBelle I think it would be better for a boy. Maybe save it for if you have a son one day 🙂

I think people really just want to me rude tonight 🙈

I also know it from Dolly Alderton’s memoir and think it’s nice! Hers is spelt Farly according to Google.

calmandcollected101 · 09/01/2025 23:14

Fartie Farley rusk

Needmorelego · 09/01/2025 23:15

@MrsBelle they are a bit aren't they?
Ignore them 🙂

KarlaKK · 09/01/2025 23:22

Ignore Mrs Belle. I think most think of rusks, that's all. You've taken the comments really well. Best wishes for you and your little girl, whatever she is named.

Sebsaloysius · 09/01/2025 23:23

My friend's Cockapoo is called Farley, because she's the exact colour of a Farley's Rusk......

I actually know a farley but he's a man, I was thinking doing the ie to make it more feminine. I didn't realise it was an out there name tbh 🙈

It's not what I would choose but if you like it, you like it! It's obviously not what others like but i don't think there is actually anything wrong with it. I'd say 'ey' feels like a spelling for a boy and 'ie' more for a girl, like you say.

SnowFrogJelly · 09/01/2025 23:29

It's a rusk!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 09/01/2025 23:31

Is your surname Rusk?

HonestCrab · 09/01/2025 23:38

I would assume you were American. They do love appropriating surnames and traditionally masculine names for baby girls. If you must, Farley looks better.

Farrah
Fern
Charlotte nicknamed Charlie?

SassK · 09/01/2025 23:45

Fartley, by classmates at some point, is surely a certainty 😂

Hunnybunny235 · 09/01/2025 23:49

My mom named me a stupidest name. And went on to have 7 kids and name us all with stupid hard to pronounce names that all have to start with the same letter because she thought it was cute. Word of advice: don’t. Don’t try to be unique. Don’t try to be cute. Be sensible like I wish my mom had been. That kid has to apply for jobs later, go to school and they’re gonna hate their name like I do.

UnderTheStairs51 · 09/01/2025 23:56

It's a name that probably wouldn't be that out there with your daughter's future classmates.

But you are setting her (and more likely yourself) up for a lifetime of people saying 'as in rusk'. It's the first thought of anyone over about 35 so that will be most of the mum friends you make, her nursery workers, teachers etc.

I doubt it will have the same connection with her age group but you've had a very clear demonstration on this thread that despite rusks falling out of fashion, it is the kind of word association you can't avoid because it's built into the public conscious.

Needanewname42 · 10/01/2025 00:16

But you know once people get over the initial What moment, is it really any different from Harley or those sorts of names?

It's certainly not miles out and it is a name unlike some of the names you get on here. I don't think anyone still gives baby's rusks - but I also know someone with surname Rusk and don't really think about it as baby biscuits

mathanxiety · 10/01/2025 00:46

Needmorelego · 09/01/2025 22:48

@berksandbeyond it is a name but a boys name.

It's a surname and that etymology is bollocks.

Needmorelego · 10/01/2025 04:04

@mathanxiety what does the name mean then?

neerg · 10/01/2025 04:29

I once.knew a girl.called Farley. She was lovely and suited her name. As far as I knew, she was never bullied for it,called a rusk etc.

Naming threads on here are always contentious.

Name your child whatever you want and enjoy it!

ThatLimeCat · 10/01/2025 04:41

This is a rotten name. As something with a dumb and obscure name, please don't inflict this on your daughter.

sel2223 · 10/01/2025 04:48

To answer your question, I prefer the Farley spelling.

Sorry people have been so damn rude when you didn't ask for opinions on the name you and your partner have agreed on, only on the spelling.
