Fraser or Cole

These 2 names are the only 2 I have on my list for DS2. Really struggling this time round. Ive been through countless baby name lists and none jump out of me. So it's probably going to be between these 2, which do you prefer? Surname is Smith. DP also likes Sonny (which I think is ok on its own) but I think Sonny Smith just doesn't sound right, it sounds a bit like a cartoon character to me. Help, I'm running out of time!

Sonny always sounds like a generic nickname to me - a bit like Buddy, so is not my cup of tea.

But both Fraser and Cole are very nice. I slightly prefer the sound of Fraser but due to the heritage of the name, I’d maybe assume some Scots links if that matters (not saying that you couldn’t use it without though).

Whereas for Cole, I’d have no expectations of heritage but because of the obvious meaning I feel like it would suit a lad with dark hair and eyes best - can’t imagine it on a fair, blue eyed blond for some reason🤣

Fraser is a lovely name, and better with Smith I think.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 06/01/2025 21:23

Love Fraser. Great name, not too popular either.

Buzzer3555 · 06/01/2025 21:30

We have a Fraser and love it
. Be prepared for it being misspelled Frazer and Frasier.

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/01/2025 21:48

Fraser is my favourite.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/01/2025 21:52

Fraser

beachesblue · 06/01/2025 21:58

I'm also leaning more towards Fraser, it's always been the only one I quite liked since the beginning and that we both agree on (but just don't love it as much as my first sons name yet), it's only really the past week that I'd been considering Cole too.

Fraser is nice but Fraser Smith sounds a bit like a generic firm name to me. I think Cole Smith sounds more like a person

Atlasvue · 06/01/2025 22:07

Yeah my nephew is Fraser and he is constantly called Frasier.

HugoYorway · 07/01/2025 14:40

Fraser. As pp, some will say Frasier.
Sonny will be a man one day.

Sk1sk0 · 07/01/2025 18:37

I like both but prefer Fraser slightly

Newgreensofa · 07/01/2025 18:42

Fraser. My nephew is a Fraser and it's such a lovely name. Yes you get the occasional "Frasier" but on the plus side I've never heard it abbreviated.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 07/01/2025 18:44

Fraser.

beachesblue · 07/01/2025 20:27

Thanks all for your opinions. At the moment Fraser is the lead name although not 100% set yet. Next question - does Fraser Cole Smith sound silly/not go? I can't decide. It's just my first son has a middle name which is after my dad so I assumed I should give this baby a middle name too but considering we've found it difficult to find a first name I'm not sure if we should even give him one as it won't really have any meaning like my first sons.

Fraser Cole Smith sounds good

kate592 · 07/01/2025 20:53

Fraser Cole Smith is good. I prefer Fraser as the first name as when I hear Cole it makes me think coal. It flows much better with Fraser first too - and if your older one has a middle name i would definitely give the younger one one as well.

WhineAndWine1 · 07/01/2025 21:22

Fraser is a surname so it would be a no from me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2025 21:52

Fraser Cole Smith sounds fine, but is there no other family name that has meaning to you like your first son’s middle name? His Dad’s name or the other Grandads name? Your Mum’s maiden name? An uncle or brother? I always think it’s lovely to use family names as middle ones- as it’s a nice link to the family tree.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 07/01/2025 22:02

Unfortunately I have known individual really annoying children with both of these names, but ignoring those associations, I think I like Fraser better out of the two.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/01/2025 22:51

Fraser Cole Smith sounds good to me!

devongirl12 · 07/01/2025 23:01

Fraser.

I've only come across Cole recently, and usually as a dogs name.

Is it an established?

Too much like coal for me.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/01/2025 23:06

The only thing with xyz Cole Smith, and i realise it's quite a dated reference - it reminds me of Anna Nicole Smith.

clarrylove · 08/01/2025 07:08

Cole Smith sounds like an occupation so I would definitely go for Fraser. Or some other similar suggestions- Findlay, Murray, Felix, Angus.
