Emrys?

We’re expecting our first on NYE and still aren’t 100% on a boys name. Our favourite at the minute is Emrys, possibly with Alasdair as a middle name.
Wdyt?

Are you Welsh?

I like it.

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2024 20:20

Lovely name

Pinkissmart · 27/12/2024 20:22

Lovely name

Knittedfairies2 · 27/12/2024 20:23

I like it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/12/2024 20:26

Not keen.

AnotherDunromin · 27/12/2024 20:27

Beautiful!

genericbrunette · 27/12/2024 20:27

I've never heard it before but I'm not keen

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 27/12/2024 20:29

Sorry no. It may be a real name, but no-one will pronounce it correctly - unless you're Welsh, and living in Wales.

Then again if you are Welsh, and living in Wales, you wouldn't be asking if it's OK.

.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/12/2024 20:30

I know a Welsh Emrys - it’s not my favourite Welsh boys name tbh. I love Rhys though, which is a possible short version.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/12/2024 20:30

Go for it, it’s a fabulous name and we would have used it if my brother hadn’t already!

I’m not fussed on the middle name but that’s less important. Just check what the initials spell with your surname

NefiBlw · 27/12/2024 20:35

@Moreteaandchocolate , They are completely different names with no connection other than they both end in ys.
Emrys is currently popular in Wales.

Kenclucky · 27/12/2024 20:39

Merlin! :) love it, brilliant name and not hard to pronounce

Snowmanscarf · 27/12/2024 20:46

Love it, and I think it’s fine outside Wales.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 27/12/2024 20:47

Merlin to me too 😁

That's funny, I had two great uncles called Emrys and Merlin. I love both names.

ThePoshUns · 27/12/2024 20:50

Love it . I had a great uncle Emrys, he was a lovely man.

Clingfilm · 27/12/2024 21:01

Do it! Lush name. Ems for short.

allmylifelong · 27/12/2024 21:21

I’m not Welsh, but my family are. Seems like general consensus is that it’s good, I also do love the Merlin connection.

Gorgeous name - very romantic sounding to me. I would assume a strong Welsh connection though, as I rarely hear it outside of Wales (so if you don’t live here he might regularly have to explain how to spell it, but at least the pronunciation seems fairly clear to English speakers, unlike with some other Welsh names). Seems to be gaining popularity in my corner of N. Wales with youngsters - I’ve met a few young Emrys over the last few years.

I'm not keen on Emrys.

I love Alasdair

Other ideas ..
Lloyd Alasdair
Alasdair Llewellyn
Rhys Alasdair

DulciUke · 28/12/2024 06:28

Never had kids but Emrys was my top pick for a boys name if I ever had one.

NefiBlw · 28/12/2024 08:53

I'm not that keen on it either but it's OK.
Lloyd is an anglicised Welsh name, but I like it.
Llewellyn is awful, but Llywelyn is great.
Rhys is a good name but I dislike it said as Reece.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2024 09:59

I am find if Emrys, but I have a Welsh nephew be this name.

I love Alasdair, that spelling in particular.

I'm not sure that Emrys and Alasdair sit comfortably together though, unless you have both Welsh and Scottish heritage that you want to incorporate..

Lloyd is an anglicised Welsh name? What is it an anglicised version of? We have a few Lloyds on the Welsh side of our family and friends.

Love it
