We’re expecting our first on NYE and still aren’t 100% on a boys name. Our favourite at the minute is Emrys, possibly with Alasdair as a middle name.
Wdyt?

Lloyd is anglicised version of llwyd meaning grey. It’s lost the correct double L pronunciation. Still a very common Welsh surname.

Emrys is a lovely name.

Not keen in Cornwall it sounds like a heavy duty mineral processing centre

MumChp · 28/12/2024 11:50

Very nice!

NefiBlw · 28/12/2024 12:34

@Zonder , Llwyd. As a pp said, it means grey.
I know a few but not many Lloyds, but plenty with it as a middle name or surname.
Llywelyn (or sometimes Llewelyn) is OK but Llewellyn looks wrong because LL is a letter in Welsh and isn't two Ls. 'Lou-Ellin' is awful.

I wouldn't worry too much about the first and middle names matching, but if you are in Wales (and with a common surname e.g Jones), there's a strong likelihood of him being referred to as 'Emrys Middlename'.

allmylifelong · 28/12/2024 15:08

It sounds generally positive!. I think we have decided on Emrys. Our girls name has already been decided on too, so it’s just a waiting game now!.
I’m not bothered about the names matching, as long as the sounds don’t clash. They’re both just names that we like.

@NefiBlw We have a double barrelled surname, but one of the names (my surname) is Jones😂. The other surname is a bit more uncommon thankfully!.

That's interesting. I've seen the name Llwyd before but don't know any. Two of the Lloyds we do know are Welsh first language.

JC03745 · 28/12/2024 17:05

How is it pronounced?
Em-Ris
Em-Rees
Or some other way?

NefiBlw · 28/12/2024 17:51

@JC03745 EM-riss

Dithercats · 28/12/2024 17:53

Popular where we live at the moment.
Lovely name.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/12/2024 17:55

Another vote for Merlin here.
I also like Gawain and Hywel.
I don't think you can use Emrys and Alasdair together although I like both names.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 28/12/2024 18:00

Love it.

Llwyd is used more as a middle name. e.g, actress A- Llwyd's father was E- Lloyd Jones, and her daughter is G- Llwyd Beech. A-'s mother was L- Owen.

Presumably the Beech is from G-'s father. Beech in Welsh is a feminine noun not normally used as a first name.

That sort of naming pattern is common. I'd have expected the middle name Lloyd or maternal Owen surname to be carried as a middle name, and using the Welsh form is not unusual.

A- and G- appear as popular characters in a Welsh soap opera. I've blanked the name a bit as they are identifiable and might not want their details on here.

On the subject of surnames and soap operas, a recent half-hour episode of a different soap opera had in the cast list 3 actors called Rhys ap [Man's name].
I think Rhys has been so popular for so long that it's tailed off a bit.

The ap [Man's name] is not that popular, and might be Dad's name or from the surname. A man called something like Bryn Owen Jones might call his son Emrys ap Bryn, Emrys ap Siôn, Emrys Bryn, Emrys Siôn, Emrys Owain Jones etc. The naming for girls is slightly different.

Many Welsh tv stars go by their first names and middle names, and the middle names tend to go in trends. (cf. Paloma Faith, Robert Lindsay, neither of whom are Welsh)

Of course you can use Emrys Alasdair, @allmylifelong .
