Peter or Joel?

Which name do you prefer? Love that they are both underused classics that you don’t hear of much these days. Middle name James or Theodore. Did a post recently about other options but it’s now down to these two!

Joel - a great solid name, not very common. We nearly chose it!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/12/2024 21:31

Joel.

joel James is a bit of a mouthful though so would go with Joel Theodore

Joel is my favourite. I like Peter too but not keen on Pete.

WalterdelaMare · 08/12/2024 22:07

Peter? That’s just awful and I don’t think it’s due a resurgence any decade soon.

BoleynMemories13 · 08/12/2024 22:16

Peter is a classic which absolutely is due a comeback imo. Peter Rabbit has been popular across the generations and helps to ensure it doesn't feel dated. I put Peter up there with names like Matthew, Michael, Robert, Christopher and Nicholas as a classic which is really underused right now.

Joel is lovely too though, very handsome. It's one of those I struggle to picture on a baby, as it's very grown up sounding, but obviously babies do grow up so that isn't a problem. Better to choose a name that will grow with him, rather than something infantile which will sound childish when he gets older.

Peter! Such a gorgeous name

PrincessOfPreschool · 08/12/2024 22:23

Joel James - JJ

flippetty · 08/12/2024 22:24

Peter is still a bit dated for me / boring. I really like Joel.

Joel

Joel by a mile! Best name and always gutted I didn’t think of it for DS1 - and couldn’t use for DS2 as too much like DS1’s name!

I have a Peter. He was named after his DG and I didn’t really get a choice. But it was a common name in my generation so I know quite a few. All are good looking, funny , laid back men who seem to have life nailed. There are a few famous Peters such as Peter Sellors and Peter O’Toole and of course Peter Jackson my DS’s firm favourite who created the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy.

DS has well and truly lived up to his namesakes. He has always been known as Pete, among other nicknames at school ( our surname uncommon and is universally shortened throughout the extended family), because he was the only one in school until sixth form he never needed anything more complex.
His name has never been a problem for him. At one point he played in a cricket team where all of them had very traditional names. The team list was straight out of the 1950s.
Compared to some of the names that children are saddled with I think that it’s now an unusual but safe.
I’ve always struggled with saying Joel, it’s just one letter too many, Joe is far better.

WalterdelaMare · 08/12/2024 23:03

I was born in the 70s and went to primary school with Peters, Stephens, Roberts, Pauls and Simons. They seem like really dull and dated names to me. Can’t imagine naming a child Peter nowadays. Plus you’d risk Pete, which is even worse.

shoopshoopdedoo · 08/12/2024 23:04

Peter!

I’m not keen on Joel. Prefer Joseph, nickname Joe.

leia24 · 08/12/2024 23:05

Joel

ObieJoyful · 08/12/2024 23:06

Peter is one of my favourite names and is surely due a comeback!

Melania90 · 08/12/2024 23:14

I have a little Peter. Gorgeous classic name.

Nikitaspearlearring · 08/12/2024 23:17

Joel is the name I wanted for DS but I was overruled. I love it, nn Joe. But Peter is really sweet. I love Theodore too. And nothing wrong with James.
glad to have been of help

bridgetreilly · 08/12/2024 23:25
