Middle name for Sonny?

Hello all, everyone has been so helpful I thought I would ask opinions on another name. Originally we had decided on Benjamin (nn Benji) but now considering Sonny. Which does everyone prefer? I love Sonny but not sure if it’s a bit nicknamey?

We have also considered ‘Kit’ as a middle name, but open to suggestions. I personally like one syllable names for middle names…

Boys names are so hard!!!

Sonny does feel very informal and nicknamey. I’d balance it out with a timeless middle name like James or Charles.

Dearover · 07/12/2024 23:54

Jim

I met a Sonny Valentine the other day. Thought it sounded pretty cool...

I like Benjamin with it.

Don’t use Weather …

mitogoshigg · 07/12/2024 23:58

Sonny is very nicknamey, why not use Benjamin but use sonny as a nickname

NuffSaidSam · 07/12/2024 23:59

Benjamin is much, much nicer and more versatile. Sonny is cute on a little boy, but being a grown man called Sonny isn't ideal.

I'd go for Benjamin Sonny Surname or Benjamin Kit Surname and just call him Sonny as nn.

Rainbowandgrey · 08/12/2024 00:00

Much prefer Benjamin

JC03745 · 08/12/2024 00:01

How are you pronouncing Sonny? I went to school with a boy and his parents pronounced it Sonny, like Ronny with an S. I've since learnt many pronounce it Sunny, like a sunny day.

Benjamin is good name. IF you need a nick name, Ben is much nicer than Benji! Benji the dog 😬

TizerorFizz · 08/12/2024 00:10

Sonny Ben was my budgie! It’s also Sonny at Tottenham. Feels like a nickname to me.

Sunny Jim was the name given to James Callaghan.

mathanxiety · 08/12/2024 00:24

Sonny is very nicknamey, I feel.

I'd go with Benjamin. Benjamin Kit is nice.

Readytoevolve · 08/12/2024 00:29

Not Sonny. Benji works nicely.

cariadlet · 08/12/2024 00:35

The first time I came across a child called Sonny, I assumed it was a nickname and was really surprised to find out that it was a given name.

Cute for a toddler but awful for a grown man. I'd stick to something that sounds like a proper name.

TTC1990 · 08/12/2024 03:25

Thanks all! Reading your replies whilst suffering from heart burn and can’t sleep!

I prefer Benjamin, OH likes Sonny. Do we think Benjamin Sonny goes? Could nn Sonny as suggested but DS still has a ‘proper’ name?

Like ‘Sunny’. Hadn’t thought about it being miss pronounced so that’s also something to consider!

Think of your child as an adult in later life who may find success in the corporate world and they are saddled with the name Sonny.

CuriousGeorge80 · 08/12/2024 04:11

Sonny is a perfectly usually name and is pronounced Sunny. Nobody is going to pronounce it like Ronny unless they live in a part of the world where Sun rhymes with Ron (I have heard a few people say Sun that way). Or are from South Korea.

I much prefer Sonny to Benjamin. Agree though that they could go together or use another classic name as the middle name.

It's a popular name in New Zealand. I really like it.

CheeseTime · 08/12/2024 04:31

I love Sonny - so cheerful, although it’s not considered a classy name and is a bit of a trendy one so will date. Benjamin is great.
Middle names are pretty irrelevant really. Just pick something with family meaning. I’ve known people for 30 years without knowing their middle name.
Sonny the high court judge? Sonny the prime minister? Sonny the bank manager? I suppose it will be a standard name by the time he’s an adult though in the way Barry and Tracey became ‘adult’ names.

Sandwichgen · 08/12/2024 04:42

You could call him Harrison or Benson I suppose, with Sonny as a nickname. He could default to the more formal version, or Harry/Ben if he chose, later

Ilovemyshed · 08/12/2024 04:49

Sorry but all I can think about with Sonny is the one that got killed in the Godfather.

user1492757084 · 08/12/2024 04:50

There is one perfect middle name with Sonny......Boy!

I love Sonny in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo.

Any family with a Sonny would have to play those programs over and over. So much fun and education about the animals too.
There is one episode where Sonny enters a school (school of the air, remote via radio) painting competition. He signs his name on the painting but I'm unsure of whether Sonny was his actual name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/12/2024 05:02

Sonny is such a cool nn but I personally like it as short for Harrison / Jackson / Hudson / Dawson / Grayson / Samson / Jason / Mason - if you like any of those longer names containing “son”?

Benjamin nn Benji is lovely too.

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/12/2024 05:50

Sonny is a childish nickname. Please give him adult options. Call him whatever you like but legally give him an adult name.

gillybombilly · 08/12/2024 05:54

Sonny Jay ( but I love Benjamin/Benji).
