Middle name for Sonny?

Hello all, everyone has been so helpful I thought I would ask opinions on another name. Originally we had decided on Benjamin (nn Benji) but now considering Sonny. Which does everyone prefer? I love Sonny but not sure if it’s a bit nicknamey?

We have also considered ‘Kit’ as a middle name, but open to suggestions. I personally like one syllable names for middle names…

Boys names are so hard!!!

I love Sonny.

Sonny James was my first thought.

But also

Sonny George
Sonny Ray
Sonny Jack

I think it goes better with a one syllable middle name

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/12/2024 06:27

Sonny Ray sounds awfully close to sunray.

mrspresents · 08/12/2024 07:08

Sonny Jay
Sonny Clay

Sonny is absolutely awful for anyone over 10. If you must use it, give him a proper middle nsme so he can use that instead.

George
Benjamin
James etc

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/12/2024 08:08

Prefer Benjamin but actually like Kit the most as a first name! Ideas for mn’s for sonny

sonny alexander
sonny james
sonny jack
sonny Elias
sonny jude
sonny george
sonny benjamin
sonny daniel
sonny gabriel
sonny max
sonny ralph
sonny arthur

Sonny Boy 😁

Seriously, I think it is a dreadful name, it just doesn't sound like a real name, just something you would use to address a youngster when you didn't know their name - "Hey, sonny...".

Much prefer Benjamin.

It's a great name for a young child , but think ahead to who he may become . You might have a future head of a company , bank manager , politician , university head , or he might grow up very straight laced & nerdy .
He might be turned down for interviews at high brow places because they don't think it would suit their ethos .

MouldyCandy · 08/12/2024 08:49

Andcher.

Benjamin is much, much nicer and more versatile. Sonny is cute on a little boy, but being a grown man called Sonny isn't ideal.

I'd go for Benjamin Sonny Surname or Benjamin Kit Surname and just call him Sonny as nn.

Exactly this. Don't hobble him from birth with a diminutive, juvenile name.

Potentiallyplausible · 08/12/2024 09:41

Please give him a proper name, which Sonny isn’t.

JC03745 · 08/12/2024 10:16

Hadn’t thought about it being miss pronounced so that’s also something to consider!

Well, its spelt Sonny, so my brain automatically reads it as Ronny with an S. I then have to think, ahh, it might be Sunny.

The child I went to school with who pronounced it like Ronny with an S was either Sth Asian or from the Middle East.

You could call him Harrison or Benson I suppose, with Sonny as a nickname. He could default to the more formal version, or Harry/Ben if he chose, later

Actually I think Sonny works as short for Harrison, and it’s quite a good idea to leverage it into something with possibly more staying power.

Benson, however, is forever Benson and Hedges .

or Sonny Day

SuffolkBargeWoman · 08/12/2024 15:29

Sonny is the short form of Santino.
If I met a Sonny I would assume at least one parent was Italian.

Sonny Ben was my budgie! It’s also Sonny at Tottenham. Feels like a nickname to me.

Sunny Jim was the name given to James Callaghan.

and Minnie Cauldwell’s lodger in Coronation Street (yeeaarrrs ago)

Sonny Jim is a well used phrase well before it was used for Jim Callaghan.

TizerorFizz · 08/12/2024 16:09

@Spirallingdownwards Well yes. So that’s why it’s not a great name. It’s a nickname. I just thought posters might have heard of James Callaghan as opposed to Sonny Liston or Sonny Rollins.

Son and Sun are pronounced the same in English, so obviously Sonny and Sunny are too. You could just as equally say Sunny is pronounced as Sonny. They're the same pronunciation. OP hasn't stated that they're South Korean, so unless stated otherwise I would automatically assume the 'uh' pronunciation as that's how it's said in English.

OP - Sonny is a term for a young boy. I always want to add 'Jim' on the end. I really don't understand the sudden spike in popularity of this name. Your young boy will grow up and it won't age well. Definitely go for the classic Benjamin.

twentysevendresses · 09/12/2024 18:53

It might be cute as a nickname on a 3 year old. Not so cute as an actual name on a 38 year old lawyer 😳

Now if he becomes a meteorologist...

Yes it’s a step too far…

twentysevendresses · 09/12/2024 20:17

@Dearover yeah that could work 👌🏻

Sonny is a nick name for anyone's son.
It is an infantile nick name that always refers to the child as the son of, smaller than version of the adult.

You could name your child Kit Benjamin or Benjamin Kit and use Sonny for an occasional nick name.
