Is Ruby dated?

suzettenoisette · 23/11/2024 09:34

Thanks for your help so far!

Only three names remain on our list: Ruby, Keira and Rosalind.

Many people tell us, that Ruby is dated and they'd expect someone in their 30s or 20s. Is Ruby dated and out of style? Should we pick Keira or Rosalind instead?

I prefer Ruby of the three, and don’t think it will ever date.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 23/11/2024 09:38

Ruby is the least dated of the three imo.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/11/2024 09:41

Ruby is one of my favourite names! I see it as a modern classic rather than dated - it did peak in the 00’s but has stayed steadily in the top 50 since then, which is a lovely popularity level imo.

MinPinSins · 23/11/2024 09:46

Absolutely yes. Ruby peaked at number 1 in 2007 and is now number 30. There were 4 times as many Rubys born then as now. So it will have that particular time frame association.

Jessbow · 23/11/2024 09:52

Ruby is okay- lots of them along with Layla's Mia's & such like

Rosalind is pretty and more 'individual' without being 'out there'- Lindy is a nice nickname

Sk1sk0 · 23/11/2024 10:01

No, I don’t feel it’s dated. There are a few in the secondary school I teach in and 2 at dd’s nursery.

rainbowstardrops · 23/11/2024 10:04

I really like Ruby. I'm not so keen on your other two choices.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/11/2024 10:09

Ruby is lovely. Rosalind is the dated one if anything.

Jonas25 · 23/11/2024 10:11

I like Rosalind but fear it would be shortened to Roz.

Comff · 23/11/2024 10:16

I like Ruby. If you like Rosalind (which is the most dated imo) do you like Rosa?

SallyWD · 23/11/2024 10:18

Wherethewildthingsfart · 23/11/2024 09:38

Ruby is the least dated of the three imo.

Agreed. Love the name Ruby. Not so keen on the other two.

tiger2691 · 23/11/2024 10:21

My neighbours had a baby last year, they named her Ruby. My sisters daughter is called Keira.

StampOnTheGround · 23/11/2024 10:23

Ruby is a great name, not at all dated.

I'd say Rosalind sounds much more dated.

sel2223 · 23/11/2024 10:33

The gemstone names are all quite popular at the moment so I wouldn't say dated!

Atishooo · 23/11/2024 10:59

To me it’s dated as about 10-15 years ago all baby girls seemed to be Ruby. There are a lot of teenage Ruby’s now. To me it still feels overused. I like Keira.

GoldenSunflowers · 23/11/2024 11:06

I love Ruby and I think it’s quite timeless.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 23/11/2024 11:10

Ruby is maybe slightly dated but only in the sense of it not being “fashionable” - and its a lovely name.

Rosalind is also pretty - I also like Rosalie and know a little one.

I’m less keen on Keira but I’m not sure it was ever popular enough to be dated.

Nottodaygoaway · 23/11/2024 11:24

The Ruby I know is 17. It's a lovely name!

My SiL is a Rosalind and hates it. She's in her 50s. She's always been known as Roz.

Keira is very Gen X, my era. It's a bit old hat now.

Sheeparelooseagain · 23/11/2024 11:39

Ruby was pretty popular 15 to 20 years ago but I wouldn't let that put you off if that is your favourite. It's still a classic name.

The strong possibilty of the nickname Roz puts me off Rosalind.

BoleynMemories13 · 23/11/2024 11:39

Ruby is the least dated of the 3! I'm not sure why someone would expect a Ruby to be in her 20s or 30s, as it was so far down the charts in the 80s and 90s. It boomed mid 00s-mid 2010s, so if anything most Rubys will be teens rather than 20s and 30s. It's still top 50 popular now though, so definitely still plenty around under the age of 10 too. Definitely more than those in their 20s and 30s.

Keira is ok but more dated to the 00s. It boomed for a while, when Keira Knightley was in everything, but fell away rapidly after that. Rosalind may make a old lady chic comeback, but right now I just picture an old lady or someone middle aged.

Ruby is by far my favourite on your list.

SabbatWheel · 23/11/2024 11:41

Loads of Ruby and Keira in my secondary school, especially Ruby. No Rosalind, so I’d go for that as I like names that are a bit different.

Floralnomad · 23/11/2024 11:42

I like Rosalind , can’t abide Ruby but that is because of a bad association.

cheezncrackers · 23/11/2024 11:44

Ruby is not classy.

Rosalind is.

Keira is Keira Knightley.

PenGold · 23/11/2024 11:44

I think they’re all nice. I think Ruby is a classic. Not quite as keen on Rosalind but love Rosa.

itsallabitofamystery · 23/11/2024 11:44

I have a Ruby. She's now 17. In a year group of 430 pupils, she was one of two Ruby's. I don't know of any younger Ruby's, a lot I come across via extended friends/family/social media are all 16/17/18.

I have to say, when my Ruby was born my dad said to me "Ruby?! That's an old ladies name!". Yet I'd never heard of it in an older person.
