Is Ruby dated?

Thanks for your help so far!

Only three names remain on our list: Ruby, Keira and Rosalind.

Many people tell us, that Ruby is dated and they'd expect someone in their 30s or 20s. Is Ruby dated and out of style? Should we pick Keira or Rosalind instead?

I prefer Ruby of the 3 and find it more timeless than the others. My DCs are 14 and 16 and I can't think of a Ruby in either of their years.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/11/2024 11:46

I like Rosalind best. Ruby was so popular 20 years ago and Ciara 25 years ago (and Keira is such a random version) that although there is nothing wrong with them, I probably wouldn't choose them now.

StormingNorman · 23/11/2024 11:52

Rosalind Ruby would be my choice. It is elegant and unusual all at the same time.

Amarige · 23/11/2024 11:53

Rosalie is nicer than Rosalind which is a bit of a stiff name.

I like the name Ruby.

I have a Ruby. She's now 17. In a year group of 430 pupils, she was one of two Ruby's. I don't know of any younger Ruby's, a lot I come across via extended friends/family/social media are all 16/17/18.

I have to say, when my Ruby was born my dad said to me "Ruby?! That's an old ladies name!". Yet I'd never heard of it in an older person.

I believe Ruby was incredibly popular in the 20s/30s era. So it would have been a name your Dad was probably very use to hearing on the older generation as he grew up. Then it became practically unheard of on babies again until the 00s.

It was one of the 'original' boomers in terms of the current 'old lady chic' trend which really hit around the mid 00s, with names like Ruby, Lily, Grace, Rose, Florence, Elsie and Iris roaring back into fashion. Obviously none of them feel like purely old lady names, as we're all so use to hearing them again on youngsters now. George, Arthur, Albert, Alfred, Stanley, Frank etc are similar equivalents for boys.

Live Ruby, keiras is OK, Rosalind for me makes me think of a posh middle aged lady who like horses and wears tweed and wellies!

CurlewKate · 23/11/2024 12:58

Less dated than Keira!

CurlewKate · 23/11/2024 13:01

I think "jewel" names go in waves. Ruby is probably due another wave soon.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/11/2024 13:14

I really like Ruby (prefer to Rosalind). Also quite like Keira

shoopshoopdedoo · 23/11/2024 14:02

Love Ruby. Much prefer it to your other choices. I think it had a moment about 20 years ago, but the only ones I know are 82 and 2, so don’t think it’s especially dated.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 23/11/2024 15:21

I think Ruby sounds like a dated trend, there were millions of them around 20 years ago. I think Rosalind is a fab name and I don’t think it has ever been popular enough to tie it to a particular era.

FuckyDoodleDoo · 23/11/2024 15:33

My gran was called Ruby. She was born in 1917 so I think that counts as a traditional name. It is also my granddaughter's middle name. I love it

Kitkat1523 · 23/11/2024 15:34

Keira is dated

mum1345 · 23/11/2024 18:57

I have a 3 year old Ruby. It's a beautiful name and I think more timeless than the other two.
Most Ruby's are in the their teens since its peak 15 years ago.
My kids in primary school (90 to a year) never had a Ruby in their class so it's less popular now if popularity puts you off.

RunningForMySanity · 23/11/2024 19:24

Another vote for Ruby here, I consider it timeless. I think Rosalind is far more dated and Keira is a bit 90s, but Ruby maintains a nice level of popularity without being too common. (Disclaimer, I have a 6-year-old Ruby, so naturally must quite like it!)

Wherethewildthingsfart · 23/11/2024 09:38

Ruby is the least dated of the three imo.

Agreed.

Kiera is very dated

Rosalind is dated but in a vintage way.

Ruby is still popular

MerryMarys · 24/11/2024 11:51

Ruby peaked at number 1 in 200

It is starting to sound dated already..!

MerryMarys · 24/11/2024 11:51

Sorry that should have said 2007

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 24/11/2024 15:23

I don't agree at all that Ruby is a classic but nor is it especially dated. There are a lot of teen Rubies around from its peak and you would simply be using it on its way back down.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 24/11/2024 17:55

I think Ruby was dated (30 years ago it would have been very much an old lady or obsolete name) but is now popular enough that it can't really be said to have gone away again. I like Rosalind best from your shortlist but Ruby second (and Ruby Rosalind would be quite a nice combination). Keira just has so many possible spellings I wouldn't give a child that problem to deal with.

BrieHugger · 24/11/2024 17:58

How about Rosa? Short like Ruby and won’t get nicknamed Roz.

RogueFemale · 29/11/2024 01:52

Ruby was dated 30 years ago. Don't do it.
