Desperately needing help...

We can not agree on names for our boy at all.

Our DCs all have non traditional names that are unlikely to be shortened (my preference is that they are called what we name them, not a shortened version..) and we'd like baby 4 to be of the same. Not too fussed about popularity/trend of the names but would like to avoid names where there is likely to be 2 or 3 in the class in years to come. We are based in Scotland.

Our lists currently are...

Mine :
Maverick
Jax
Luca
Dawson
Ace / Asa

DHs :
Dominic (know it's likely to be shortened)
Cole
Abel
Kaleb
Dexter

Other names we have considered are : Cruz, Jett, Phoenix, Ezra, Enzo, Jaxon, Leo...

Middle name is to be Theo.

Please chuck us some suggestions that we might like as I feel like this baby will be nameless for weeks once born!

OnNaturesCourse · 11/11/2024 10:57

Any suggestions of names for us to consider?

From your lists, Luca, Dominic, Dexter and Leo are ok.

How about:
Zachary (Zac)
Jake
Mica / Mika
Quinn
Mason

Rosybud88 · 11/11/2024 11:14

Would you consider:

Axel
Kane
Carter
Parker
Colt
Knox
Tate

My favourites from your lists would be - Jett, Cole and Jax (but it does remind me of Vanderpump Rules). Another poster also suggested Quinn which is a great name.

lawlessland · 11/11/2024 11:17

I like Luca and Ace. Leo is nice if you rethink the middle name.
Not keen on the others.

wizzler · 11/11/2024 11:24

@lawlessland the middle name won't change, it's a family name. Thank you x

Luca and Abel are my favourite from your list

Ellis
Rex
Enzo
Jude
Silas
Leon
Rafe
Nico
Bruno

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 11/11/2024 15:02

Felix
Tate
Axel
Parker
Luca
Jude
Hugo

crostini · 11/11/2024 15:08

But you can't call him Leo Theo surely, so maybe need to cross Leo of the list!

How about

Rocco,
Kiefer
Elio
Jago
Eric

Cattery · 11/11/2024 15:14

Leo Theo 🤔

Leonarda89 · 11/11/2024 15:30

I like Ezra and Phoenix from your list. Luca was the most popular boys name in Scotland last year so I would use that if you don't want a super common name.

What about Ren, Elio, Albi, Oran, Nico?

RuthW · 11/11/2024 15:39

From your lust, only Jax, Cole and Ace can't be shortened.

How about
Max
Joe
Luke
John
Sam
Paul

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/11/2024 17:23

I like - Cole, Luca (but too popular), Leo (also too popular and not Leo Theo!), Kaleb (prefer Caleb), Dexter, Ezra, Enzo, Jaxon (prefer Jackson).

Do you like

Arlo
Otis
Rory
Rufus
Milo
Otto
Silus
Cyrus
Rio
Archer
Blake
Levi
Koby
Reid
Boden
Bryce
Mason

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 11/11/2024 17:27

Rory and Eli are both very popular for under 3s in my corner of Scotland right now.

ScanaDully · 11/11/2024 17:34

These are all absolutely terrible.

SkaneTos · 11/11/2024 17:46

I think you have many great names on your lists!

Do you and your DH like the names on each other's list? I mean, do you like the name he likes and vice versa?

Other ideas
Damian
Pascal
Dennis
Micah

Vax · 11/11/2024 18:52

Jax is awful, sorry. Maverick is surely going to end up as Rick

Dexter will be Dex but not a bad name.

Asa is my favourite by far.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/11/2024 21:07

Laith is my favourite uncommon Scots name that’s unlikely to be shortened.

I do love stunning Asa from your list though, and Caleb from DH’s is lovely too (when spelt the original way). I also love similar Scots Callan btw but that might get shortened. Not keen on your other picks, sorry.

Other uncommon names that are fairly nn proof (as they are already short):
Heath
Bram
Orin
Jared
Orry
Lev

sel2223 · 12/11/2024 06:43

Just as an aside, boys tend to get called a version of their surname by friends anyway....

So 'Thomas Smith' will be called whatever name you set with family and teachers whether that's Thomas, Tom, Tommy etc until he's old enough for a preference..... but to his peers, i can pretty much guarantee, he'll just be 'Smithy' or 'Smithster'.
If you like a name, I wouldn't get too hung up on what it can or can't be shortened to.
