We can not agree on names for our boy at all.

Our DCs all have non traditional names that are unlikely to be shortened (my preference is that they are called what we name them, not a shortened version..) and we'd like baby 4 to be of the same. Not too fussed about popularity/trend of the names but would like to avoid names where there is likely to be 2 or 3 in the class in years to come. We are based in Scotland.

Our lists currently are...

Mine :
Maverick
Jax
Luca
Dawson
Ace / Asa

DHs :
Dominic (know it's likely to be shortened)
Cole
Abel
Kaleb
Dexter

Other names we have considered are : Cruz, Jett, Phoenix, Ezra, Enzo, Jaxon, Leo...

Middle name is to be Theo.

Please chuck us some suggestions that we might like as I feel like this baby will be nameless for weeks once born!

Just as an aside, boys tend to get called a version of their surname by friends anyway....

In my experience that only happens if they have a very common name like Tom or Harry and need to use their surnames to be identified.

LeticiaMorales · 12/11/2024 07:40

Don't call your child Maverick because of the meaning...
Otherwise, some nice ideas. Dominic and Luca are lovely.
Ranald is a lovely old Scottish name, as are Hector and Hunter. Cairn, Lewis, Dexter?

What meaning

What meaning

I guess it can mean individualist or non conformist, but often the context is negative.
However, your choice. If you like the name, use it.

Oh really? No, it's across the board here. Maybe a regional thing.

I just think of Top Gun

LeticiaMorales · 12/11/2024 16:26

There may be a situation with nominative determinism.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/11/2024 16:55

What are you going to do Op when/if the day comes that they want their names shortened.

All the names you’ve listed there can be abbreviated.

I’m trying to think of unshortenable untraditional names.

Clay. Zak. Duke. Bram. Kai.

jacquettalux · 12/11/2024 17:35

Some great names, OP!

Maverick - not a fan, likely to be ‘mav’
Jax - not a fan, feels unfinished to me
Luca - love
Dawson - don’t like, feels very american
Ace / Asa - love asa, not ace

Dominic - will definitely be shortened
Cole - not a fan
Abel - too biblical for me
Kaleb - like it but definitely with a c not k
Dexter - will likely be dex

I also like Cruz, Phoenix and Ezra. Ezra seems to be getting really popular.

From your list, Asa is by far my favourite.

Good luck!

How do you pronounce Asa?

Ass-a? Like AXA?

Or Acer? Like Ava?

The Asa I met pronounced it Acer.

MerryMarys · 12/11/2024 19:26

How do you pronounce Asa?

I've only heard it pronounced as Ah-sa (not Ay-sa)

sel2223 · 12/11/2024 19:37

I like the look of Asa but the pronunciation differences would definitely put me off.

There's alot of potential teasing at school with Ass-A or Arse-A

Luca, Dexter, and Dominic are nice.

Not keen on the rest.

Dexter might be a good compromise?

Ay-sa.

Long first A rhymes with hay.

Full name rhymes with Ava.

Asa is pronounced Asha if you're Jewish or O-sa if you're Swedish. Just saying as you grouped it with Ace.

Maverick is awful, sorry, and likely to be shortened to the equally terrible ‘Mav’.

I like Ezra and Leo but appreciate you can’t call him Leo Theo.

Some Scottish or Gaelic names might appeal to you - Aran, Cathal, Adair, Seòras, Finn, Brodie, Logan.
