Thoughts on the name Xavier for baby boy. Please be really honest. If you do or don't like it please explain why as would be helpful.

Thanks

Very cool, sounds nice and fairly unusual. Definite yes from me.

Summer24isRubbish · 23/10/2024 04:48

I adore Xavier …. Always have since middle school French lessons back in 70’s

but not a name i considered for my son.

blindasaba51981 · 23/10/2024 05:02

We have a Xavier in the family. I like it!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/10/2024 05:08

I like it but there are multiple pronounciations . I would say it in uk as zay-v-er

Love it!

My ds is an Xavier. Beautiful name. Big thumbs up here!

semideponent · 23/10/2024 05:56

I have a Xavier. We pronounce it zay-vee-er.

The only thing I haven't liked is the x-men and ninja turtles associations, and the way Americans say eks-ay-vee-er.

Otherwise all good and I have no regrets. He likes it too.

TianasBayou · 23/10/2024 06:08

Like it and pronounce it as zav-ee-ay.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/10/2024 06:09

I’ve never heard it pronounced Zayvier - that’s a lovely pronunciation! I only know it from a Spanish friend who used the Spanish pronunciation (also nice but I found it hard to make the “h” sound at the back of my throat for “x” correctly!)

BoleynMemories13 · 23/10/2024 06:48

It's not to my taste (I prefer traditional) but there's no reason you shouldn't use it if you're ok with correcting people on the pronunciation. I've heard Zah-ve-er, Zay-ve-er and Ex-ay-ve-er for this spelling. Even Zah-ve-air.

Have you considered Xander, if it's the x which appeals? Less problematic in terms of pronunciation.

I didn't know there was an association with ninja turtles! Will check that. That was one of the negative things about Raphael as I really like that name too.

I do not watch X men but have heard of a connection which is a little bit of a downer. Do people make reference to X men and turtles alot?

Another silly think is, are you able to get initial things for your son? I know we wouldn't get the full name which is great but are you able to get a stocking with an x on for example?

My daughter's name is unusual so I don't want a popular name just hers begins with C so we can always get something with a C on it but don't want him to feel left out of we can't get things with and X on. Silly I know but all the little things I am thinking about.

My 13 year old is called Xavier, it's a beautiful name. We pronounce it Zay- vee- er. Not met another one so far and he gets lots of compliments. Go for it.

Jennyathemall · 23/10/2024 07:49

Most people’s thoughts will defiantly by X-Men - he’ll be asked if he can read minds and get the nickname “Prof”. Which isn’t terrible actually.

Isn't that Javier?

Does he get lots of X men questions? Are you of Spanish decent? We aren't and not sure if that's weird to us it?

Strong religious connotations for me! Francis Xavier is a... divisive figure. It's entirely due to him that the name became popular (it's originally the village he came from). Pre-X-Men it would scream "very religious Roman Catholic" family to me, but I've managed to adjust.

Surely it's

Hah-vee-er

I would think anyone saying zay-ve-er was doing so because they don't know how to pronounce it properly

MoralOrLegal · 23/10/2024 08:04

@VioletCrawleyForever "Zay-vee-er" is how it was pronounced in England for centuries before its recent resurgence in popularity. I've never heard any of the churches named after him pronounced in the Spanish fashion.

Hah-vee-er is how you say Javier (Spanish)

but the only thing that puts me off Xavier is the various pronunciation options. French style (zah-vee-air) is best IMO. Great name anyway

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 23/10/2024 08:06

I love it! It's a strong name that's different but not ridiculous.

I'd have considered it for ds2 but it wouldn't have gone with our first sons name at all!

Parsley1234 · 23/10/2024 08:07

I love Xavier my son is Sacha 21 tomorrow and have had no name regret ever except for Xavier over the last year and if I had a girl YaYa - go for it it’s the coolest name

Okay, forget ninja turtles. Don't know what I was thinking - maybe too early in the morning for me!

X-men references only in the US not in the UK.

Initial stuff: I don't really go in for this. No problem when I've needed monograms for a purpose, but I do notice that generic initial items in the UK don't generally include an X option, where they do in Europe. For instance, both kids had breakfast bowls with their names on that we bought in Europe. DD also has quite a European rather than traditional British name.

Radiatorvalves · 23/10/2024 08:09

We nearly went for Xavier. I really like it. DS got an Irish name instead, but as we spend a lot of time in France, sometimes I think we made the wrong call.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/10/2024 08:10

French exchange family pronounced it Zav-ee -eh where we is shorter than our EE and eh is nearly ay but not quite.

You'll get a lot of mispronunciation. Can you cope with that?
