Thoughts on the name Xavier for baby boy. Please be really honest. If you do or don't like it please explain why as would be helpful.

Thanks

It's better than the other options you have posted.

It doesn't mean saviour, it means house or castle and a PPs have said is from the town in Spain.

I'd pronounce it the Spanish way but wouldn't be surprised by the French/English way. I'd never heard the American pronounciation and am slightly horrified by it, I would have thought there were enough Spanish speakers in the US that everyone there would pronounce it correctly.

Have you heard them pronounce croissant? Or Gloucestershire? 😂

IKR, bloody hell, the Americans can't pronounce anything correctly!

Which is exactly how Marvel gave the word the horrific "Eggs Saviour" pronunciation.

MulderitsmeX · 23/10/2024 09:26

I like it but there will be pronounciation issues.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 23/10/2024 09:33

It just makes me think of that bloke who always pops up on online memes (presumably a 'stock' figure rather than one man answering all of them?!), making the perfect witty comment about something that somebody else has posted!

MoralOrLegal · 23/10/2024 09:33

As I understand it, the Arabic name "Zaviyar" is completely unrelated, but pronounced in a very similar way to the historical English version of Xavier.

goldenshred · 23/10/2024 09:40

I loved it since seeing it on my cabbage patch dolls bum!

rainbowstardrops · 23/10/2024 09:48

I really like it. It sounds cool and different but not too whacky. I went to school years ago with a Xavier and he was lovely! I've worked with children for 30+ years and never came across another one.
Oh and don't worry about not buying things in shops with an X on. My children have not particularly common names here in the UK and I can never find things with their names on but there are loads of options for getting things personalised now.
Go for it!

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/10/2024 10:11

@VioletCrawleyForever , Not in the UK. It's Zay-vy-er. Many say it as Ekz-ay-vy-er though.

Apollonia1 · 23/10/2024 10:28

Love the name!

I would pronounce it as Zaviour, to rhyme with saviour.

I used to live in Spain, but would never use the Spanish pronunciation of Javier (like khav-ee-ay) when pronouncing Zavier in English.

MerryMarys · 23/10/2024 10:38

I would pronounce it as Zaviour, to rhyme with saviour.

What? Confused

Xavier is pronounced as it's written, Gsa vee eh.

TemuSpecialBuy · 23/10/2024 10:41

Big tick.

I love it.
French way is the best imo

My husband is Catholic and doesn't seem concerned with a negative connection. I will do a little more digging.

I mean if you vetoed all the names which had religious connotations of people who evangelised especially during the times of the Spanish/ Portuguese inquisition you'd have to veto Thomas as well and loads of others! It's just St Francis Xaviers dead body is still in Goa in a glass coffin ( dont ask!) , which is where my family are from, so it was a bit ' raw' for DH shall we say! I'm Catholic and it didn't even occur to me. Most of my family's middle names are Xavier!

boysmuminherts · 23/10/2024 11:02

Love it love it. It was the name we settled on before our nearly 14 year old DS was born. Would have pronounced it the French ish way. Zav ee ay. But right after the birth the midwife put us off it!

Why did she put you off? What did she say? What did you choose in the end, if you don't mind sharing?

There are many Thomases in Christianity, most of them positive. ("Thomas" on its own is always "Thomas Aquinas" for me.) Same with the other common names associated with the Inquisitions and waves of colonial/missionary activity. To me (and I'm old, and definitely know more than the average about religious history!), names like "Ignatius" and "Xavier" are deliberate references to some pretty unpleasant individuals. I know that I'm in a tiny minority here.

She has a name that is difficult to spell/pronounce so said we would be always doing the same. I do love his name we chose thought so all's well that ends well. Don't really want to say his name here.

I'm finding boys names exceptionally hard and understand why people call the children the same few names over and over because as I'm finding, every name is associated with something or has pronunciation issues or something else. The more I dig the less options I have. This is already from a narrow pool of names we liked to begin with! 🥴

Quite like it. Will be mispronounced, as per this thread, but it’s better than your other options!

That's DS name! We pronounce it Zay-v-er

Be ready for a lifetime of misspelling and pronunciation tho😁 We're a 4 culture family so everyone has their own version of it.
English -as above
French - Za-v-ah
Portuguese - Sha-ve-ah
American - X-a-ve-er

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/10/2024 11:35

@Iwouldliketogoonholiday , many different pronunciations have been given on the thread, some of them seem to be incomprehensible, as much as I like the name, I'd use it as a middle name not a first one.

If the name is used in the UK, then it doesn't really matter how it's pronounced in Portugal, Spain or France, does it.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/10/2024 11:36

KnickerlessParsons · 23/10/2024 08:32

It should be pronounced Zav-ee-er

There are multiple ways to pronounce it

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 23/10/2024 11:50

I certainly wouldn't use it if your surname happens to be Kissesforme.
