Thoughts on the name Xavier for baby boy. Please be really honest. If you do or don't like it please explain why as would be helpful.

Thanks

Really like Xavier.

If you really thought of something that you wanted both your kids to have monogrammed, could you turn to Etsy, Not on High St or similar?

Congrats on pregnancy!

vincettenoir · 23/10/2024 08:12

I know a couple of kids called Xavier, it’s an exciting name. I like it. I might pause if you and DP have really ordinary names like John and Liz or something but overall I like it.

Strong religious connotations for me! Francis Xavier is a... divisive figure. It's entirely due to him that the name became popular (it's originally the village he came from). Pre-X-Men it would scream "very religious Roman Catholic" family to me, but I've managed to adjust.

Edited

I wanted this for DS1 but it was vetoed by DH because he expelled all the Jews from India ( I think I cant rememberthe exact conversation that got it vetoed as it was 27 years ago!) and he has Jewish family. DS1 has a Jewish name now!
I do think it's a cool name though, and if you aren't Catholic/Jewish, no one would know. Most Middle ages Catholic saints did a bit of persecution. It was basically the way to sainthood.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/10/2024 08:14

I love it in France (kzav-ee-ay) but the "Eggs Saviour" pronunciation makes my teeth itch so I wouldn't use it in the UK.

2Old2Tango · 23/10/2024 08:16

I live near an adult Xavier and I like it. A bit unusual.

HollyLondoner · 23/10/2024 08:17

Love it!! Beautiful name! Lots of personalisation sites these days to get things with their name on!

zzplex · 23/10/2024 08:24

Too many different pronunciations and he'll have a lifetime of people not knowing how to say his name. I worked with one and still can't remember his preferred pronunciation, despite asking him - think it may have been like Saviour but starting with a Z.

saraclara · 23/10/2024 08:24

Not a fan. Too many different pronunciations, and the religious connection too strong. I wouldn't be comfortable with my child basically being called Saviour

My husband is Catholic and doesn't seem concerned with a negative connection. I will do a little more digging.

Love it!!!
and he will love having a name beginning with an X - how cool is that?

I like it but there are multiple pronounciations . I would say it in uk as zay-v-er

It should be pronounced Zav-ee-er

Ozanj · 23/10/2024 08:35

I view it as a religious name and don’t really like it as I’ve only ever seen it used by staunch muslims or catholics.

Ozanj · 23/10/2024 08:36

KnickerlessParsons · 23/10/2024 08:32

It should be pronounced Zav-ee-er

it’s an arab name. Correct Pronunciation is Zay-vee-er

california22 · 23/10/2024 08:37

I'm Catalan and it's very popular there (or at least my generation!) but I would think the pronunciation would be difficult for English speaking (we pronounce it cha-vee-ehr and said it any other way would be so weird to me). But as a name it's nice.

GretchenWienersHair · 23/10/2024 08:38

I like it. How would you pronounce it; “zay-vee-ar” or “Zavv-ee-air”?

EDIT: ignore this. I must remember to RTFT…

LoafofSellotape · 23/10/2024 08:41

Love it

Zah vee air

I'm really surprised by the pronunciation variations. I am English and never met anyone with that name, but without question I thought it was pronounced have ee air.
Which I guess is the Spanish way. Google tells me that the French and English ways are quite different, but I had no idea about this and I can't be alone, so would think you might have more issues than you think with it not being pronounced the way you expect.

It's a really common name in France and I imagine most people will have heard the French pronunciation which is fairly similar to the standard British pronunciation. I doubt many people will think of the Spanish pronunciation, it is more commonly spelled Javier in Spanish in any case.

No it's not, it's of Basque origin.

The Spanish pronunciation is very different to the British pronunciation which is similar to the French pronunciation (although differently stressed).

Manchesterbythesea · 23/10/2024 09:11

I wouldn’t personally use it but it’s not a bad name at all.

california22 · 23/10/2024 09:12

@WhosPink the Catalan pronounciation which I was talking about is completely different to the Spanish one. In Spain is Javier, in Catalonia Xavier - very common.

afrikat · 23/10/2024 09:14

Absolutely love this name! It was my first choice for our son but we compromised on a different X name. Go for it. Definitely Zay vee er for UK pronunciation

It doesn't mean saviour, it means house or castle and a PPs have said is from the town in Spain.

I'd pronounce it the Spanish way but wouldn't be surprised by the French/English way. I'd never heard the American pronounciation and am slightly horrified by it, I would have thought there were enough Spanish speakers in the US that everyone there would pronounce it correctly.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2024 09:22

Fabulous name.
