Does the name Emily go with our surname?

We really love the name Emily.. it has always been my favourite girl name but the problem is our surname is ‘Kelly’ and wondering if due to this and perhaps being too ‘matchy’ sounding that we have to veto the name 😬 thoughts please?

It doesn't go at all to me tbh. Far too similar sounding

DogSittingAgain · 20/10/2024 22:36

I agree with Featherrrr.

TashaTudor · 20/10/2024 22:36

I don't like it sorry. I wanted Sophie but my surname ends in an ee sound and there were others I liked that would have been too alliterative. Emma is an alternative I suppose.

girljulian · 20/10/2024 22:36

I think it is too similar -- Emma Kelly would work? Aisling Kelly?

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 20/10/2024 22:37

Emma would go better with your surname

CallYourselfAChef · 20/10/2024 22:37

No, it doesn't sound right. Emma might be better.

TashaTudor · 20/10/2024 22:37

Or Emmalina, Emilia etc

Normallynumb · 20/10/2024 23:07

Sorry I agree.
Emma flows well
Amelia perhaps?

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 20/10/2024 23:13

Bucking the trend - I think it's fine. Emily doesn't really sound like Kelly.

Frightenedbunny · 20/10/2024 23:15

I actually like it! I have an Emily Grace. It’s a classic timeless name!

WoahThreeAces · 20/10/2024 23:17

What?! Emily Kelly sounds absolutely fine! Emily is a lovely name ❤️

Enko · 20/10/2024 23:21

I don't think it's a problem
It's not too rhyme..

confusedlots · 20/10/2024 23:21

I love the name but I don't think it flows very well with your surname. I prefer Emmeline Kelly.

AndyMcFlurry · 20/10/2024 23:25

There are lots of pretty girls names with a similar vibe that work much better with your surname. Id avoid those that end with an ie / y sound and those with dominant L sounds.

Berlinlover · 20/10/2024 23:26

I know a man called Brian O’Brien and also a Conor O’Connor, so Emily Kelly is fine.

But nobody says the middle name. The OP's surname is Kelly, so it'd be Emily Kelly.

That will sound the same

DoYouReally · 20/10/2024 23:39

Emily Kelly's is a very common name in Ireland.

Google it, there are loads. I think it sounds lovely.

LemonLime9 · 20/10/2024 23:42

I think it sounds ok. I don't like emmeline Kelly at all

Shhhthedogssleeping · 20/10/2024 23:44

It’s definitely ok imo apart from maybe both ending with y. If you love Emily, I’d not let it stop you calling your DD it.

Also like Emmeline, Emilia and Emma with Kelly

I’m guessing she means it’s a double borrowed name. I know an Anna Grace and it never gets shortened to Anna.

I know a man called Brian O’Brien and also a Conor O’Connor, so Emily Kelly is fine.

In a doctors waiting office once and a man called Stephen Stevens came in, sighed and said 'Stephen p h and Stevens with a v' made his appointment and left. 5 minutes later a man comes in and his name is Thomas Tomson 'Thomas with a h and Tomson with no h' it was really bizarre

mathanxiety · 21/10/2024 01:34

Emily Kelly is perfectly fine. As PPs have noted, that kind of name is common in Ireland, where Kelly (and Murphy) are common surnames. Emily Murphy, Sophie Kelly, etc don't sound odd at all.

RickiRaccoon · 21/10/2024 03:03

It doesn't sound great to me. On 1st hearing it, people will get confused over the repeated ending sound. There's plenty of other nice names.

MaggieBsBoat · 21/10/2024 03:06

I love it!
