Does the name Emily go with our surname?

We really love the name Emily.. it has always been my favourite girl name but the problem is our surname is ‘Kelly’ and wondering if due to this and perhaps being too ‘matchy’ sounding that we have to veto the name 😬 thoughts please?

I do think Emily Kelly sounds a bit clumsy. I’m not keen on Emma or Emmeline but really like Emily, so I sympathise. I think names like Charlotte, Lucy, Florence, Harriet, Eleanor are more Emily-ish somehow.

@TashaTudor that's hilarious!! How strange.

I love. The name Emily Kelly - it does have a roll to it but I like that. Sounds film star-esque to me.

Personally I wouldn't. Two names ending ly is too much. Just because there are plenty of people called Emily Kelly in Ireland apparently, doesn't mean it's a great combination. I think you know that deep down, otherwise you wouldn't be asking. Ultimately, your daughter is the one who will have to live with it. I know I wouldn't want to introduce myself as Emily Kelly as the rhyme actually makes the combination quite difficult to say. It's one of those combinations that could easily make the owner of the name inwardly cringe every time they have to say it aloud.

Emma Kelly or Emilia Kelly go beautifully, if you're drawn to Em names. Emmeline Kelly isn't as great imo, but it's better than Emily Kelly. Personally, I love Emma.

No, too hard to say together. Emma or ember would work or Imogen.

I was going to say avoid names ending in y/ie but then I thought that Sophie actually works so it depends on the name

I very much disagree with the majority, I think it fine. I’m saying it in my head and I’m not getting tongue tied.

Mulberrygal · 21/10/2024 07:09

Thanks for all your responses 💗 I am very torn and the opinions add divided too so it is hard to know but we have some time to think. We do like Emilia also but not as much as Emily. Not a big fan of Emma. Other names we like are Isla, Erica, Isabel and Rose if any of you think one of these might be the best option? Thanks for your responses really appreciate x

I think it's fine.
If someone introduced themselves to me as Emily Kelly I wouldn't think anything negative, I really lied the name Emily too.

From your other names I much prefer Emily. Really like Rose and Emilia. Not keen on the others.

My order of preference would be
Emily
Rose
Emilia

Runninglateagaintoday · 21/10/2024 08:49

It sounds fine to me but I’m Irish and know lots of Kellys and it seems a very normal sort of name to me. I don’t find it hard to say at all. I understand about having both names ending with an ee sound, but I think the fact that Emily has 3 syllables and Kelly 2 helps.

It doesn't sound great to me. On 1st hearing it, people will get confused over the repeated ending sound. There's plenty of other nice names.

Why would that be confusing??

OnlyWhenILaugh · 21/10/2024 11:54

I don't understand the problem pps have.
It has repeated l sound but that neither a problem to say nor does it sound at all odd to me. In fact I like that repeated sound.
It's not a tongue twister.

Sheeparelooseagain · 21/10/2024 12:09

Even with a different name you could end up with an ie shortening/nickname which gives the same issue eg Rosie Kelly. I'd go with the name you really want.

Journeyintomelody · 21/10/2024 14:10

I went to school with an Emily Kelly, Dr Emily Kelly now

SJM1988 · 21/10/2024 14:13

I think its fine.
But I have a Charlie and my surname is similar to Chaplin so not sure my opinion should count lol

Ellerby83 · 21/10/2024 14:17

I think it's fine

salamithumbs · 21/10/2024 14:18

I actually know an Emily Kelly and her name never struck me as odd! I agree that a name like Millie Kelly would be a bit much but I think the 3 syllables in Emily makes it different enough from Kelly to sound normal and flow!

Comedycook · 21/10/2024 14:18

Yeah it doesn't sound right.

How about Emilia instead?

Idontlikeyou · 21/10/2024 14:18

I rather like it, there’s nothing unpleasant about how it sounds at all and it’s not hard to say.

Karatema · 21/10/2024 14:19

No, my best friend's DD is Emily and her surname is the same as yours!

StormingNorman · 21/10/2024 14:19

I’m struggling with all the Ls when I say it out loud. It feels like a tongue twister. It looks very pretty written down though. The double ee endings don’t bother me at all.

Erica Kelly is lovely. The k sounds in both names has a real ring to it.

I met someone with a similar name recently and it was shortened to Eri (pronounced airy)

Karatema · 21/10/2024 14:21

Should have added, I love her and her name 😀
