Really struggling with a girl’s name - Mia, Ella or something else 💜

We have 2 boys, very traditional names (Oliver and Joshua). We are having a girl but really struggling with a name.

It has to go with the boys names that are quite traditional. I liked Alice but my DH doesn’t like it.

We both think Mia and Ella are nice, but I’m just not sure they are ‘nice’ enough!

There are so many lovely girl names out there but we are really struggling! Any help appreciated.

I prefer Ella of the two (although I like Alice more, shame your DH doesn't).

Suggestions:-
Oliver, Joshua and...

Charlotte
Grace
Emma
Emily
Rose
Lucy
Hannah
Abigail

Thank you @BoleynMemories13. yes I think I also prefer Ella. It is a shame, he says it reminds him of an old lady name 🙄 but I’m not too keen on his suggestion of Paige.

there are a few on the list we can’t have due to family names etc, it’s so hard! I want a strong name … we haven’t even started on middle names yet 🤦‍♀️

Combination of the two?
Mila

barnstone · 19/10/2024 20:55

Well if you both like Mia and Ella, how about Mariella?

Other names I think of as being strong and traditional are:

Eleanor
Imogen
Harriet
Elizabeth
Eliza
Alicia
Lucinda
Serena
Alexandra

Georgia with George

dressdisaster2024 · 19/10/2024 21:12

Ava, Amelie, Beatrice (Bea), Charlotte (Lotty/Lotta), Myla, Eva.

dressdisaster2024 · 19/10/2024 21:13

Annabelle

tediber · 19/10/2024 21:16

What about a mash of the 2 you mentioned so Mila. I know a couple and think it's actually quite lovely.

8weekscrossed · 19/10/2024 21:22

Thank you everyone. Lots to think about. I also liked Holly but it wouldn’t really work as we call our by Oli!

Thea
Gaia
Freya

All have an A sound at the end like Mia and Ella but feel a bit stronger.

staybyyou · 19/10/2024 21:29

I love Alice but it didn't go with our surname.

Martha
Daisy
Ivy

Moreteaandchocolate · 19/10/2024 21:31

Ella is lovely with Oliver and Joshua. I like Mia too.

Do you like

I love Freya ❤️.

8weekscrossed · 19/10/2024 21:35

@staybyyou what did you choose instead? Alice does go with our surname, but DH really doesn’t like it!

@Moreteaandchocolate thank you, lots of good ideas to think about

So I think our 3 shortlists are

• Ella
• Mia
• Freya

we have a short surname, 2 syllables, so would add a middle name as both boys also have middle names.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 19/10/2024 21:46

What about Eleanora then you have Ella or Nora as nn, or Emilia and you could have Emi/Mila/Mia

Pyjamatimenow · 19/10/2024 21:47

freya of those three

Doubleflux · 19/10/2024 21:49

Eva Maria

TomatoSandwiches · 19/10/2024 21:54

Freya is the nicest one out of those although I think Alice is better, shame he doesn't like it.

What about, Anna, Alicia, Felicity, Emma, Lydia, Millie/Amelia, Thea.

merryhouse · 19/10/2024 21:59

Lydia
Susanna
Miriam
Jemima
Alison (I know it's very 70s, but it's a variant of Alice he might prefer)

8weekscrossed · 19/10/2024 22:01

@TomatoSandwiches I will suggest Alicia, that has also gone on my shortlist!!

Mumofteenandtween · 19/10/2024 22:05

Mia and Ella are both beautiful names.

Mia can be short for Amelia and Ella can be short for Gabriella if you are a fan of “Sunday names”.

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/10/2024 22:05

I love Alice but if oh doesn’t like it nog sadly. Mia and Ella are nice names and go well. Other suggestions

grace
emily
leah
lily
lucy
eva
charlotte
rosa
eloise
thea
clara
martha
bella
helena
ava

Hmm, Oliver and Joshua are classic, Top 100 popular, 3 syllable names with obvious shortenings (Ollie and Josh) - so I’d personally look for similar for your DD, since presumably they’ve served your sons well so far? So perhaps Maria nn Mia or Eleanor nn Ella rather than just Mia or Ella. Other ideas of similar names:
Sophia (Sophie)
Emily (Emmy)
Evelyn (Evie)
Charlotte (Lottie, not 3 syllable but v. classic)
Elizabeth (4 syllables but so many nn’s)
Matilda (Tilly)
Isabelle (Izzy/Belle)
Harriet (Hattie)
Jessica (Jess) - too close to Josh?
Florence (Flo/Flossie- 2 syllable but style works)
